a lot of people on /r/RedPill[1] criticize women for their hypergamy.

Only the ones who don't really understand. Women shouldn't be criticized for hypergamy, it's in their nature.

Okay to whom? You are the only person you're accountable to. Make decisions based on your moral compass and your goals, and fuck everyone else.

What is expected of men?

Depends on who you ask.

It is fairly clear, at least to me, that divorce and custody laws operate for middle class to upper class men as a severe sanction against upgrading. They do not operate similarly for women.

In less formal relationships, such as dating, men are much more free to upgrade, and often will when given the chance. Typically for men, however, they will have opportunities to upgrade only as they move upwards in social status as they age from 18 to middle age. And then only if they also maintain their appearance and achieve monetary gains.

It is not coincidental, therefore, that at the same time men are achieving their SMV gains--ages 25 to 40--the divorce and custody laws operate strongly as a counter to men upgrading their sexual mate to a higher value model.

So women and some segment of men seem to expect when these upgrades may occur. And laws have been structured to keep men from doing so at a time when women want stability in their lives.

Here, however, I think the expectation is that a man should only show to a woman the level of loyalty offered to him, nothing more. And sometimes, not even that.

Echoing from /u/Aughin about relationships and hypergamy from a post two days ago.

"Relationships are not a trade of intimicy, comfort and sex. Its a preference. This person increase my life's quality there for I will keep her/him around. And the second he/she stop doing that I'm going to start working towards finding someone else to do it."

Look, Hypergamy vs Polygamy is about capability - if men could fool women into birthing and raising a child they had with a famous, smart & beautiful woman - they would do it, much like if women could get a lot of men pregnant at virtually no biological cost to themselves, they would do it.
