A popular theory at the moment is that it satisfies her fear of being labelled a slut.

Once the intention of fucking is officially removed, then it "just happened" - the idea being that if sex is motivated by emotion rather than decision it's somehow better and more excusable.

This may seem foreign to men, who know that consequences follow actions, not intentions. However women know that the attacks they'll face for being a slut are not from men, but other women.

This is because women use sex as a tool, so intentionally fucking is discouraged because it decreases market value (scarcity) while at the same time disadvantaging other women in the game. Also an emotional experience is much more accepted because now that premarital sex has been socially allowed, the only pretense of a relationship's permanence is emotional connection.

Remember that this all sits within the nuanced landscape of friendships and strict social hierarchies women create, so it's not something they'll consciously recognize very often - and certainly not admit to! That would defeat the purpose of the act in the first place and get them labelled as manipulative. When you build up enough trust with a platonic female friend they'll often tell you this as something "other girls" do though.
