I was exactly like that, and it wasn't until I read up on game that I realised how friendzoned I became instantly around girls. Basically I just started joking alot less about myself being like that. Instead, the same jokes I'd say about myself I will say about others, or I will just say the same joke but make people realise how false it is. It's kind of hard to explain, but the point is - you can do it, but not too much, and try to make fun of others aswell, and not only yourself. A little bit of self-hate works, but too much of it and you won't have a chance. Make people know you believe you are the baddest motherfucker there is

Don't crack jokes that devalue yourself or that criticize you in public all the time. Being able to laugh at yourself is a good thing, but criticizing yourself all the time will make you look like you're not confortable in your own skin. I'm not saying you should never make a joke about yourself, or allow others to make jokes about you, just that you should do this with scarcity, and always keep a positive atitude about it.

For an instance, I have a ridiculously bad sense of direction, can't tell north from south, can't give directions to people and usually end up getting lost almost everywhere i go. That's something that comes up all the time, because I usually have to leave earlier and arrive later whenever I'm going to somewhere new to me. Everybody knows I suck at this, and everybody (me included) used to joke about this, and it was getting problematic because people started to get the notion that I either didn't left home with enough frequency to be able to come and go without problems, or that I was simply too retarded to go places on my own (the second one is the right answer). What did I started to do? Whenever someone would point out "Aren't you going to get lost this time?" I usually answer "I don't get lost, I go in adventures. WAY more exciting, you never know what you're going to find out" and leave with a smile.

give me an example of a type of joke you used to use? everything seems to work better with examples.

I'm still trying to figure out the type of humor girls like. Mine I don't think is cutting it.

self-deprecation is one type of humour. there are many other types, and if you're naturally a funny guy you should have no problem picking them up: metaphor (in a humorous way can be great), word exchange/simile (lots of examples such as: using "getting wet" instead of "fucking"), condescension, sarcasm, deliberate lying (said with a trollface), roleplay, black humour, hyperbole, etc.

I suggest writing down what you think is funny, and then find out why it is funny. As such you will be able to be more spontaneously funny in a way that suits your personality.

A lot of people I know who do what you describe come off as attention whores at their own expense (IMO).

Give me an example of what type of jokes you use/context

In the meantime:

Look at them and wink if you've said something making fun of yourself, and don't overdo it.

Say it with a completely straight face, and then let yourself smile when people laugh about it

I used to have that problem (always the funny one), I used to always want attention and make people laugh... now I really don't give a fuck if people think Im funny or not (even though they always think I'm hilarious), my sense of humor has evolved over the years to be more an asshole, think of Stephen Colbert's style of humour. He acts like a nself-centered asshole, but everyone knows he's not actually like that so he's a hilarious and a badass alpha male at the same time... be an asshole and make the girl laugh at the same time, thats the key
