From my experience, getting them on your side works. Putting them down to make yourself look good often works against you.

Engage the guy in conversation and control the conversation. Get him reacting to you and qualifying himself to you. This'll bump you up in value.

First of all, you need to realize that women are adults and they can make their own decisions. If they like guy X more than guy Y, they have the right to be with guy X. Period. And anybody who tries to prevent women from doing that is a controlling, sexist asshole. For that reason, there is never any real "competition." She either likes you or she doesn't.

Here's what I do when random guys butt in: I'm super nice to them and I try to include them in the conversation. This makes you look confident, in control, and nice. Because the other guy probably wasn't interested in talking to you, he won't be ready and you can control the conversation. I'm nice the whole time but I will make fun of the guy if he says something incredibly douchey or stupid. Usually what happens is that the guy isn't prepared to have a conversation with me as well so he kind of becomes silent and mumbly so I subtly shift the conversation back to me and the girl, leaving the guy by himself.

But generally, I make the other guy be the asshole. And then the woman can see very clearly who is being the asshole. If the guy keeps being an asshole, I'll say "you know what, you're not being nice, I'm going to go over there" and then leave. If the girl likes you, she'll come with you. If she doesn't, she won't. This is only appropriate to do, however, when you aren't sure that the girl is "on your side." If the guy is being very aggressive and the girl clearly isn't digging it, and she is clearly into you, you shouldn't leave her there. You should take her and leave and go somewhere else in the bar. If the guy continues to be a jerk get the bar security to throw him out.

Now if the guy that's cockblocking is one of her friends that's obviously harder. In that case, I will be nice to him but if he keeps hating I will just say "hey I don't think your friend likes me. It was nice to meet you" and leave. If she tries to keep your interest you can get her number and then call her later, but its my personal opinion that girls that hang out with guys like that are usually trouble anyway.

If one of YOUR friends does that shit, well you need to tell him to knock it off or stop being his friend (or at least stop going out with him). This shit is incredibly immature and downright creepy.

Here's what you won't do: Seek out the correct women. Either a bit lower than your standards so less competition or seek out the absolute most beautiful (not slutty) looking women because most guys are too afraid... Like yourself. So here's what you do:

When competition is underfoot, say something of the sort: "It was nice meeting you but I have friends waiting for me across the bar. You have a good night Abigail." (You must be in control of the conversation and leave on a high note though) Most important part, you do in fact now have to leave. You will be seen as valuable since you have people waiting on you. You aren't the needy, desperate guy who just wants to linger and throw desperate compliments around, and she hasn't "won you over" already which will make her want to pursue you even more.

So leave then bump back into her 30-45 minutes later. If she remembers you, make it happen. If not, you were hopeless from the get go. You can have multiple scenarios like this going on at once. It's all a numbers game.

Or just make a crap ton of money and be damn good looking.

Edit: Works 1/4 times but tell her your grandma has the exact same pair of shoes she's wearing. Right before she dies inside, smile and say "I'm just kidding, I think those shoes look amazing with your outfit."

So this is a really good question. I absolutely love role play and you can justify just about anything with that, like in a story make that guy one of the suspicious people you'll have to deal with (before he approaches) and let her on it. When he approaches talk to him that way, if they get really flustered and unsure of what's going on just you'll usually make the girl laugh and he'll be confused.

Let's just continue this whole story and say he plays along and he's hilarious. That's awesome! You found somebody pretty cool and can buddy up maybe even make a real friend. Honestly you could probably pull more women working with this guy you've never met than against him. You looked great displaying your social skills in front of your target but what if he still is going after her. Don't worry to much, there are plenty of others but the next paragraph might help.

I'm going to go ahead and jump to the most likely worst case scenario. The guy is funnier than you, he's more entertaining than you, other people around you are excited listening to him. Just go with it match his excitement, tell him how funny it is and pat him on the back. Basically become his biggest fan. He'll get excited because you're getting excited, his attention will be on you. Keep his attention on you, and slowly pull back from the conversation. Lean back a little and slowly transition from excited and impressed to you speaking with a calmer tone while he is still talking and start to pull into the conversation more and more because he's probably running out of gas. Make him qualify himself to you while doing this.

The idea in that last one is that if the most interesting guy in the room is only interested in one guy he just met, which one is more interesting. As a disclaimer I don't believe I've ever really had to do the last one but I think David Deangelo did it When a group of guys climbed through his resort window in Germany and became the party. Guys usually won't step in on you after you buddy up with them.
