I think it depends on the context of you approaching them. For example it's easy to imagine that a woman could feel bothered/ objectified if you approached her in the street and asked for her number (because she is probably just trying to commute to/from work or something and doesn't want to be seen as a sexual object right now, she has shit to do). But if you're in a social setting like a friends group, pub, a group activity, etc....when why not try? As long as you do it politely, the worst that can happen to you is getting rejected! Also, it would probably work better to introduce yourself/ make small talk first before asking for a number/ date, that way it comes across more as "you seem like an interesting person, let's date!" rather than "you look hot, let's date!". It's called a self-limiting belief. Iff you believe you are bothering them, you are. Wait...objectified? You think they don't want to be seen as attractive and to date men? What? Oh...you are just feeding excuses to your fears. Let's try an experiement. Make 100 approaches and let us know how it went. At least then you will know if you are overthinking or have approach anxiety. (It's the latter which is causing the former.)

Don't be such a pussy. Even if they're bothered, they'll forget about you altogether in a couple weeks. Their quality of life won't be diminished one iota.
