I have been dealing with something similar. In my group of friends I'm probably the 2nd or 3rd best at picking up girls. I haven't really read too much into PUA techniques other than be confident. I recently found my confidence and it has been amazing, but I digress.

I can usually walk up to a girl, start a conversation, and generate at least some interest most of the time. But sometimes if I'm working a particularly desirable girl one of the AMOGs will walk over and start up a conversation. I hate this because then there is this "competition" vibe going on. Who can be funnier, who can be smoother, etc. I don't want to play because I feel like when I'm competing for a girls attention with a AMOG it's a turn off to her and i just dont feel comfortable int hat situation.

Basically, I feel like if i stick around she will get turned off to both of us, but I don't want to just leave and lose the girl.

Touching people is a great way to steal someone's thunder, and make yourself the dominant person in a conversation. In the example above you mention him making penguin jokes.

An easy way to handle that is to wait till after he tells a joke and (hopefully) waits for people to laugh. Then you laugh politely (not over the top), tell him 'that's a good joke, I'm gonna steal that from you next time I'm hitting on some girls' (disqualifies him), and touch him on the shoulder (in a good humored way). This is also the point where you power through (because your now the center of attention again) and run another opener. Although make sure you have good body language, and voice tonality! It works great as long as you don't end up making yourself look like the asshole.

And if you really want to drive the nail into (his) coffin use an opinion opener that has a lot of 'chick crack.' In other words use something that has to do with emotions and feelings (good example is the jealous girlfriend, or the double standard (as I call it)). Chances are he wont know what to say in these situations, and the girls will dominate the frame. Or even if he does chime in there's a chance that he will say something that (at least) one of the girls will disagree with, and you can use that against him.

Could you clarify the situation a little bit? Does the other guy just say exactly what you were planning to say, thus stealing your thunder? Or is the other guy just talking about the subject, in general?

Also, what exactly do you mean by, "When he gets too far?"

In general, I'd say, try to read the girl(s)'s faces; generally, it's best to treat it the same way the girl(s) are doing.

If the other guy is genuinely hogging all of the conversation and not letting anyone else talk, and making himself look like a selfish tool, everyone else will look annoyed pretty quickly, but probably not say anything. When he's not looking at you, you can make eye contact with the girl or whatever, and roll your eyes and do a shrug/sigh as if to say "Wow, who is this guy, what a tool?" If they're thinking the same thing, they'll probably do a facial expression like "Yeah, I know, right? what the hell?" Then, after he eventually gets frustrated and leaves, you got your in.

On the other hand, if the other guy is being reasonable and funny and charming, then I don't see the harm in joking around with him. If the girl(s) approve of him and his behavior, then do exactly what the girl(s) are doing. Joke around with him, give him bro-fists and high fives and whatever. He will either respond the same way to you, making you look good too, or he will ignore you, making him look like an asshole. It's win-win. (That is, unless you're the one that's been acting out of line)

I'm no expert at this, but what I have noticed is that most guys simply aren't playing the same game as folks who understand a little more deeply what's going on. I had a situation recently where I was in a group of over a dozen guys and just a couple of girls. At least three of the guys were interested in the girl I had my eye on, obviously enough that I could see it...but I never felt like they were a threat to me being the one she would hook up with. This may be different in club/bar game, where people tend to be a bit more cocky and confident and able to interact confidently.

I don't think it's productive to try to be louder, funnier, etc. I'll try to be friendly, converse briefly, laugh politely, and game the guy as well. I'm a genuinely nice and friendly guy, so this isn't a stretch. If he's being an ass, I obviously don't act as friendly...I'll take a "get a load of this guy" attitude, and maybe comment on his alcohol intake, if I'm sure he's drinking; "Ah, man, I think you must be a few drinks ahead of me...let me catch up some, and we'll talk more later, when we're speaking the same language." While laughing at him as you'd laugh at a friend who's drunk too much. Get used to tooling back and forth a bit...you might even end up enjoying it. It's something guys do, even good friends. Watch Rescue Me or The Sopranos; those guys are always making jokes about each other...it's just what alphas do with other alphas. Relax, and have fun.

You can also blow guys out by calling out the fact that they're picking up girls, as pooflinga mentioned; that's solid game. It's a bit harsh, I think, though, so if the group is big enough and you aren't clearly going after the same girl, I don't see a reason to blow a guy out. If there are five girls and three guys who aren't obviously going after the same girl I like, I figure that's fewer cock-blocking girls I need to contend with. The guys can be my wings, if I play it right.

I wouldn't go back to the opener once your thread has been hijacked and taken in a different direction.
