Some people have high harm avoidance. There's probably nothing more toxic to the development of good game than harm avoidance. Here are some examples of how it gets in the way:

  1. Will avoid approaching in the first place

  1. Will wait for perfect moment to approach

  1. Will avoid starting conversations out of fear that people aren't interested

  1. Will avoid stating opinions because people may disagree

  1. Will avoid physical contact out of fear that it will be unwanted

  1. Will wait for perfect moment to ask for number, kiss, or close

  1. Will avoid showing interest out of fear of looking like a rejected loser

  1. Will avoid smiling or being friendly out of fear of looking like a phony

  1. Or conversely, may smile and be friendly to avoid rejection

Harm avoidance has a physiological basis. People with high brain serotonin are prone to learned helplessness and avoid novelty and risk, whereas inhibiting or reducing serotonin brings forth an impulsive, disinhibited state.

There are direct ways to reduce serotonin activity (read Ray Peat's work), but lifestyle probably makes more of a difference.

Taking risks means you stop being afraid of taking them, thus you're less inhibited in the long run. Avoiding them means you're always scared of what's lurking in the closet, so you avoid opening it, and you grow soft not being exposed to risk, making you more afraid of it.

But breaking free of the chains is tough. Is telling yourself, "Yes, I'm going to embarrass myself or ruin my reputation" a good way to go about it?

Or maybe "It doesn't matter if I fail, if I approach then I win because I gain experience"

Anyone had strong harm avoidance tendencies, but managed to break free? Or maybe a seduction expert who had tendencies like these? I wonder if someone who is as much as a wuss as me managed to get good at this stuff.
