Older male here, so factor that in.
Sex is really communication. Yes, he/she has a great ____ and does _____ like life depends on it, but after the urge to procreate, a partner is truly a partner if both of you open up and share with each other.
First, not all men are the same (and you know that, because not all women are the same). But humans have a few things in common, and being understood, part of a group, and accepted are the big ones.
Second, you're not a loaf of bread - and if you are, I'm sure scientists want to talk to you to figure out how a loaf of bread can post online. Something can only "go stale" if it never changes, develops or grows. You are not the same as you were 10 years ago, and you won't be the same person tomorrow you are today.
Are you going to take that journey through time with him? Are you going to open up, be vulnerable, ask real questions, really fucking listen, forgive him and yourself, celebrate wins, support him when he needs it and accept the same from him?
If so, there's no way the physical element of your relationship won't thrive. Think of it this way - you will be fucking *him*, not his just his body.
People are attracted to people who are real, honest, and present. Yes, when we are younger, a great _____ might cause us to cross the street or approach someone. But after that, it's up to the two humans to connect.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and thorough response. It’s so easy to get caught up in the physical (especially in my age range I think) that it’s easy to write off deep communication and growth. I may be far overthinking the physical aspect and causing the emotional and communicative aspects to suffer. It may be time to open up and share like you mentioned. Thank you for giving me encouragement I needed!
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm really happy that you found some meaning in it.
As a voice from the future (since I'm not in your age group), the physical is just as significant, but when you are truly connected, the physical has more meaning.
So not to be too crass, but someone could have the same shape/size/feel and I would be aroused by her _______ more *because* it's her. I hope that makes sense.
[–]Normal-Confection145 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It really does make perfect sense! And I genuinely find it helpful to hear advice from someone who’s already lived through my age range and gathered that wisdom when it comes to dating/sex/relationships. I hope that he’ll feel the same way about me when it comes to connection that you described. Hope you have a good one!

This is definitely a humble brag but I am quite grateful to be one of those women that can derive their own pleasure from giving head. No shortage of enthusiasm there lol! Thanks for the input friend :)

That’s great actually. So you’ve been in this relationship for 4 years, are saying that sex is happening less frequently or more of you/him/both going through the motions a bit, or is it another issue? Just wanted to clarify since you said “downwards trend.” Have you and he maintained good physical shape throughout the relationship? Unfortunately the common trend is that both parties tend to let themselves go a bit through a long relationship which can lower desire, sexual stamina, etc. I’m not expert but I’ll try and give advice if I can. I’ve coached/helped a few guys through some in DM’s with decent results
[–]Normal-Confection145 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I appreciate the offer for deeper advice! Yes, sex is definitely happening less frequently than at the beginning, which isn’t TOO shocking but has been concerning me. Down from several times a week in the beginning to 2-3 times a month. Once a week if I’m lucky. For physical shape, we definitely have both gained around 15-20 lbs respectively from when we first met, just with life and Covid and the rest. I have been around 150 lbs for the last year (I’m REALLY short so it is definitely chubbier on my frame) but I started a new workout routine a month ago to try to get back in shape and I’m already down four lbs! (Although it might be relevant that he has said to me that he’s concerned less with my weight gain because it caused me to go up a cup size in my chest. That may have been just him reassuring me however.) Do you think the weight gain could be a big factor here? I believe I wear it well (he does too, his weight gain never bothered me) but I am not a man so I’m unsure how important it is to you all.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
That’s great that you care enough to ask for advice and work on it. Unfortunately an SO gaining weight is a big attraction killer for men (source: friends, personal exp, psych major, personal research, common sense, etc). Look up the Coolidge effect. Men will unfortunately overtime become “bored” or less interested by repeated sexual stimuli. This is a part of male biology and human nature, and can happen with women as well although to a lesser degree looks-wise. Gaining weight can speed the Coolidge effect up rapidly. He probably said it doesn’t bother him too much because, like 99% of men, he doesn’t want to a.) hurt your feelings because he loves you + b.) deal with the emotional fallout and drama from telling his woman that she’s gained weight and that he isn’t as attracted to her as he was before. It’s a lot easier to keep the peace and maintain the status quo. BUT it sounds like you’re working on yourself, that’s great. We could all be a lot healthier these days especially post Covid when a lot of people understandably let themselves go a bit. Keep working out, getting healthier, eating right, even if you lose minimum 15 lb he’s going to notice in a big way. Keep going after that I think his desire for you is going to be increased bigtime. Also in the mean time maybe try sending him sexts, like “I have a surprise for you later” + a nude, or have him come home with you in a sexy outfit. This stuff can work well. Best of luck to you. Disclaimer: I’m not a professional, just an observer and researcher of relationships/human socio-sexuality and student of the game
Edit: SO = significant other
[–]Normal-Confection145 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You know, that’s really what I needed to hear. I wanted to believe that he was genuinely interested in my newer “curviness” but deep down I figured it was most likely just to spare my feelings. Even apart from the relationships, regaining my healthier body should definitely be my priority these days and I’ll stick to my workout routine. I’ll take your advice as well and try to take some flattering pictures in the meantime. It’s been WAY too long since I put together a nice lingerie photoshoot for him. Thank you again for your advice, genuinely I think it’s given me the most motivation I’ve had to get things back on track. Helps to have a solution in mind! I hope you have an awesome day, truly. (I’ll also look up the Coolidge effect like you mentioned!)
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Always happy to help someone who seems like they genuinely want to improve. You seem like you know what’s up and you’re on the right track. The Coolidge effect in a nutshell is basically that men get bored banging the same woman over time. It’s just physical thing and has nothing to do with their love for the woman. It can be mitigated by staying healthy/in good shape (a big one), trying new things in the bedroom (role play, outfits, sex in different places (dressing room at store, etc), and I think by a good foundational respect/love for your partner. If you really love and value someone dealing with the sags and extra flab that comes with aging is easier because everyone gets old and no one stays young and tight forever. That said, staying in shape does help a lot :) hope you have a great day as well and best of luck
Edit addressing the first part of your last comment: if he isn’t verbalizing regularly that he loves your size/curves/extra weight, then he probably isn’t about it. Some guys are really into that and they’ll usually let you know
[–]Normal-Confection145 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Right! After researching the Coolidge effect (for like the last half hour haha) like you suggested, I know I can’t fight that biological drive completely but I’ve researched ways to minimize its effects. A lot of it was spicing things up like in the ways you mentioned. And to your edit, yes, I think I was definitely being naive taking a couple of reassuring comments as total truth for his opinion when it felt like he was just being kind. This is some really good stuff, you’re doing God’s work out here.

Glad I could offer some value 😊👍🏻
[–]Granny_Killa 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Honestly if a guy has any other options.. the weight gain doesn't help. I was seeing a girl who was only just on the chubby side. We took a break. Seeing her again and she's now well into chubby. She's a really nice person but when we're getting naked I can't help thinking 'im giving up all my other options for this' and really actively looking around since we aren't committed.
If a guy is very nerdy and probably gets 1 new girl a year of his own accord? Then he may not be too put off by it. But yeah I have a minimum standard and when an existing girl dips below that she becomes more of a convenience I can drop than someone who is worth my spare time and sexual energy.
Sorry might sound brutal but I do place some value on myself so I maintain standards.
[–]Normal-Confection145 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No I understand that perspective, for sure. I know everyone is different and it’s fair to have that preference. I will say my boyfriend didn’t have a whole lot of luck with the ladies before me (think “math team in highschool, solo to prom” to put it gently lol) so I’m HOPING he isn’t considering going out of his comfort zone for other options just yet, haha. (That’s not to say I think he couldn’t pull another girl, I’ve really seen him grow in confidence these past few years so I’m not overlooking that factor). Working on the weight is gonna be my priority going forward. I’ve done it before so I’m sure I can do it again if I just dedicate my time to it for the sake of making myself more of an asset to keep around, if that makes sense. Thanks for the brutal honesty, sometimes you need to hear it.

I see a lot of bullshit on here, I'll be real simple people that are together for a long time Get complacent. Don't get complacent and as much as you want to fuck him he can't get complacent either. He's got to have to want to fuck you. It's 100% both parties, not 100%. You 50% him both 100%. And people think getting old and being fat and happy is the way life should be when you're in a relationship and it's the exact opposite The longer you're in a relationship, the harder it is. There is no such thing as being fat and happy, You do that. You get sick of each other and then you move on.
Yeah, I spoke a bit on that with another commenter. I think we’ve gotten a bit complacent. I’ve gotta get back on my gym routine. And you’re right, it is 100% on both parties, but personally he hasn’t done anything to make me lose interest (sexual or otherwise) in him. He’s attractive to me, he’s intelligent and successful, and he’s good in the bedroom. The only issue seems to be his decreasing desire, which I think may be (at least partially) due to my physical and emotional complacency. Thank you for your advice, I think you’re right and it’s time to get out of that comfortable mindset and start working to make myself more desirable. I appreciate you taking the time to help. :)

Just show up and be enthusiastic
[–]Normal-Confection145 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
It’s so easy to overlook enthusiasm. I’ve been told by many different guys that the best sex they’ve had was when the girl was enthusiastically participating in sex/going down on them. The same is probably true in many aspects of a relationship I’d assume! Thanks for the reminder, that’s definitely something I can work on.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Guys are easy. We just want someone that wants us as much as we want them. Enthusiasm will keep the lust strong. Just make sure it’s not fake.
[–]Normal-Confection145 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
For sure! Thankful I don’t have to jump through the same hoops as a man, haha. I genuinely think it’s probably harder in the dating/sex/relationship scene for you all. Regardless, however simple that advice is, it really does help. Have a good one friend!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don’t have any problems but for a lot of guys, being single and horny is a horrible burden. Women definitely have it easier then men. You have the fortune of having what men want and all the men lined up trying to get in it.
Counting my blessings then, haha. Glad you’re comfortable in your situation! Sounds like you must have had success :)
[–]monkey36937 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Having reviews on how the relationship is going and what to improve on. Both of you better be good at taking criticism and improve on it.
This is really solid advice, I just wish it weren’t so hard to broach that subject haha. I think it’s definitely time to sit down and ask about his needs and his honest criticism, and to tell him how I’ve been feeling about his decreasing interest/desire. Just gotta make sure I’m ready to hear his honest thoughts without letting it get to me. Thank you for your input friend.
[–]pandigroove 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Someone mentioned the coolidge effect already. A way you can use that is through changing your look through clothing/makeup/hair if you and your SO are comfortable with that. Many possibilities, only limited by your creativity.
[–]Normal-Confection145 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Thank you! Honestly reading about that worried me terribly, because the information made a lot of sense but didn’t offer a whole lot in way of how I could do my best to keep him invested in me rather than follow those biological urges, you know? Your suggestion sounds like a really good way to kind of mix things up (especially because I know men are very visual) and keep things interesting, at least on the outside. I appreciate the help friend.
[–]pandigroove 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Glad you find it helpful. If you have any inkling of what he's into that could go a long way.
Potential ideas: cheerleader, raver/party girl, naughty nurse/doctor, 1950's pin-up girl, etc.
Or even something as simple as a new set of lingerie, change of hair colour/wig, well-done eye make-up.
[–]Normal-Confection145 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I think the party girl/raver idea would be up his alley for sure. I’ve never really leaned into the sexy outfits that come with clubbing culture. Maybe a new look and a night out to match the look (heading to a club because it’s probably been years since our last time going) can give a sense of something fresh! Thanks for the ideas.
[–]pandigroove 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Another idea came to me. If you and your partner are into any kind of tv/anime/movies/books that could lend themselves to some nice cosplay that's another potential avenue. Everyone loves a good wonder woman for example!
I would also like to add that leaving things to the imagination does wonders. It's far more arousing than just plain nudity.
[–]Normal-Confection145 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You hit the nail on the head for cosplay. Before Covid we would go to conventions together and I would dress up (he’s not much for costumes himself but was very active in helping me pick a costume). I don’t think I’ve ever seen him be quite so “energetic” as when I dressed up as a character from his favorite anime when he was teen haha. Maybe I should look up some cosplay events then, or just do it for the fun of it ;)
[–]pandigroove 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Haha, nice! But hey, if you are gonna be his (example) Harley Quinn then I think the least he could do is be your Joker.
[–]Normal-Confection145 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I still have hopes to convince him to join me in costume; I think it would be a fun change of pace. But hey, Halloween is right around the corner, maybe a costume shopping date is in order! You’ve given me some really good ideas to try. Feels good to have a plan set in place now to spice things up. I’ll definitely be taking your advice. You are awesome, dude!
[–]pikecat 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Sometimes the idea that you can do it any time you want, is the problem. As it doesn't actually get something on your to do list done, so it gets left until last.
The top comment says a lot.
I do concur with the intellectual intimacy. Knowing people at the deepest level makes you feel closer, and like shagging again. No matter how deep you go, there's always another level further down.
As for things that you can do to revive stale sex, it mostly in the mind too, but in a different way. In general, introduce new activities and ways into your sex life. What secret desires does each have that they've been afraid to tell about. Getting to try your secret desires really works.
When it comes to the things that do what you want, it will be different for different guys. Some things that have worked with various girls: follow your guy into the bathroom, do it there, do it the bosses chair, etc. Watch porn together. One girl liked to go to strip clubs. When you go out in a dress, go commando. Set weekly or monthly goals, like at least once a day for a month, or twice a day.
Sex is a bit like a self fulfilling prophecy, the more you have, the more you want it.
You’ve listed out some really awesome ideas. First and foremost, like you and the other commenter touched on, I’ll definitely be making a point to work on that deeper communication and intellectual intimacy, as you so eloquently put it. A way to maybe combine that with what you said about secret desires would maybe be to enjoy some wine with a home cooked meal and try to move the conversation towards deeper sexual desires he may not have shared? Do you think, or is that too on the nose? In addition, I do know something that’s worked for him in the past was commando under a dress like you mentioned! Guess it’s time to break out that old trick, haha. Thanks so much for the awesome advice, friend. I’ll do my best to put it to good use.
[–]pikecat 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Getting deep can take a while to get to in a conversation, so have time. After sex is a good time to talk, people feel open then. Afternoon sex is good. Talking is a long term thing, it makes you closer.
Speaking of afternoon sex, one of my memorable incidents was going out after sex. My girlfriend stopped on the sidewalk, spread her feet a bit, and plopped out the result from earlier.
Hahaha! That is HILARIOUS. Could be a downside (or a plus?) from going commando under a dress I suppose. Gotta be careful where I walk after lol.
So maybe instead of getting deep into the conversation over dinner, I’ll wait until after we (hopefully) enjoy some intimate time together. Talk about ways to make it better and such when he’s feeling more open, as you said. Thanks again for the insight (and for the laugh; I don’t usually giggle so hard at things like that but the mental image was truly too hilarious not to.)
[–]pikecat 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's a video that still runs in my head. Sexiest girlfriend I've had, she could never get enough.
Life gets busy and it's hard to find time to talk, people drift apart. TV and internet are bad for relationships, and sex.
Before there were electric lights, people would sleep just after dark. They would wake up in the middle of the night, socialize or shag, talk. Then sleep again until dawn.
Glad I could help.
Amen man, it’s so easy to get distracted and forget to focus on one another. Taking time to unplug from phones, tv, and other distractions is so important to me and it’s nice to see other people recognize the value in just talking late at night and allowing for passion when the whim hits. Always nice to discuss with a likeminded person. Hope you stay well, friend. Thanks again.

My lovely wife and I have been married for over 40 happy years. We have been pretending for years that we are having an affair. It's just low level silly stuff but fun. We have lots of fun with this. But it's just a part answer to your question. The bigger thing for us is knowing each other's love languages and acting on it deliberately. But the biggest answer is to show deliberate love and respect.
[–]Normal-Confection145 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Congratulations on a happy 40+ years! That’s truly inspiring. What a cute (and honestly kinda sexy) little running gag to have going! I THINK I know his love languages (acts of service, physical touch) but it’s been too long since I’ve made a deliberate and conscious decision to focus on those. Thank you for the advice and the reminder! Passive love is a trap that’s too easy to fall into. I’ll definitely take your advice and try to focus on loving with deliberate action.

I am sure you both will do well.
[–]iamchrismarley 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
We’ve had a lot of luck learning about and experimenting with masculine feminine roles… trying them more extreme as well as swapping
[–]Normal-Confection145 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Now THAT sounds intriguing to me. I’ve considered delving into some gender-role swapping and exaggerating and the such before. It’s a tad out of my comfort zone, but I have definitely still been interested in that idea and you have renewed my attention to it haha. Maybe after a glass of wine for confidence I’ll ask if he’s interested in experimenting with the roles a bit. (Between you and me, I think he’s dropped hints on being interested before lol, during talks about kinks and roleplay) That could REALLY be the change of pace we need to renew that spark. Thanks for the suggestion! :)
[–]iamchrismarley 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Not necessarily gender-swapping, although you can, but more about masculine/feminine which is different at least in American culture.
[–]Normal-Confection145 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So for you is that more leaning into certain aspects of traditional male/female behaviors sexually? Or perhaps clothing or actions? I don’t mean to pry if you’re not comfortable sharing.
[–]iamchrismarley 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Actually we make adult content so the entire world has seen already 😂. We’ve found me (male) leaning heavy into extreme (healthy) masculine is hot for her, and her leaning into extreme (healthy) feminine is hot for me. As far as switching, she’ll instruct me to go to the bedroom, tie me up and do what she pleases with me. We’ve played with a strap on and that was super hot too. We haven’t done clothing swap or anything like that - but some couples love it.
Oh that’s awesome, I’m getting advice from a pro then haha! That makes sense the way you explained it, and seems like something we could ease into. I think he’d DEFINITELY like it if I leaned into the feminine. (Andddd I would definitely like to lean into using a strap-on if he’d agree to it; he’s expressed curiosity before so fingers crossed haha). I’m sure you can get more extreme with it but what you described seems like a phenomenal starting point for us to push the boundaries a little and spice things up! I appreciate you taking the time to explain, friend.

You know, we ventured into bondage 3 or so years ago, enjoyed it, but never really tried to build on that so we just never really did that again. I think I still have the cuffs and ropes laying around somewhere in a box… that could be a fun thing to reintroduce (and the wax is an intriguing idea too lol). He’s coming over tonight so I’ll dig those out before he gets here. Thanks for the suggestion, fingers crossed it makes for a fun night! :)

Everybody gets bored especially in your age group - i don't think you can do anything about it no matter what you do - a "normal" person seeks "new" experiences no matter what you tell yourself .....
Well, I appreciate your honesty. I know deep down there’s some truth to that sentiment. Hopefully there’s some way for me to develop “new” experiences myself so he doesn’t give in to the natural desire to seek newness somewhere else. So far so good, but four years together is nothing in the grand scheme so I know better than to bank on him staying perfectly content with me forever. Thank you for your openness.
[–]bocank 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Hopefully there’s some way for me to develop “new” experiences myself
No...you can try, but, when i say new i mean everything - not new "tricks" a whole different person/body/mind.
doesn’t give in to the natural desire to seek newness somewhere else
You can't stop the "force of nature". Meanwhile if you cherish and respect him he might be inclined to stay longer.
I have always tried to cherish and respect every partner I’ve had. Thank you for the reminder to make sure he knows that. Maybe you’re right and it’ll help :)

Especially with men, we were designed to desire sexual variety. I know it’s difficult for women to understand and this can lead to a lot of relationship issues I.e. the man cheating but still being in love with his SO
I appreciate the response. Do you have any thoughts on actions I can take to try to remedy this, like maybe watching porn together or something like that to satisfy his visual cravings? Or am I just doomed to hope and pray that he won’t give in to his biological urge to seek out other partners?

This is going to sound silly, but us guys are actually quite simple. We get turned on but confidence, tight bodies, sexy outfits, and spontaneity. Despite what people say that guys are "dogs", the good news is that we can be loyal like dogs, too. But truth is guys also have a tendency to want "fresh and new", too. My suggestion is: step your game up a little in terms of self-improvement. These things do not need to be dramatic changes. He already loves you for you.
Its about a small tweaks -- spend more time in the gym where one day the change is just a little more....."noticeable". Your stomach is flatter, tighter ass, legs stronger, etc. Get some new clothing. Clothes that are fresh, sexier. Maybe a slightly new hair style with maybe subtle highlights. Very important: Don't go too far. Don't do anything that isn't genuinely YOU. He just needs to see you with fresh eyes.
Again, he already loves you for YOU so don't think you need to become a different person. Just upgrade certain parts and turn on the charm a little bit. That's my suggestion.
Honestly this is definitely something I should do. I’ve been very stagnant with my style and my fitness (lack thereof really). I mentioned getting back on my workout routine and that’s definitely something I’ll be sticking to (just got back from the gym haha). However I really really like the idea of swapping up my look. I haven’t had highlights in YEARS and he loved them we I had them. Definitely time to freshen up the appearance.
Also, thanks for the reassurance that most men aren’t literally dogs slobbering over the next piece of meat they can find. It’s easy to worry myself to to death over whether or not I’m good enough to keep him around, when in reality he’s never shown a sign of being disloyal or totally uninterested. Just LESS interest lately, but maybe you’re right and mixing things up will help! I appreciate you. :)
