I’m choosing to take this as a confidence booster in the “If he can do it, I can do it too” type of way.

Also reading this has placed more awareness in my mind of being ready for natural, situational openers such as the receipt or dog barking.

I’ve been putting off starting approaching for a while, to be honest. I do talk to strangers often when out but usually don’t continue the conversation very long.

after you open you ask girls their name and what they do for work etc?

I read here that you should never do that and that you need to ask them much more exciting stuff etc (and it got a LOT of upvotes). People were saying in one guys FR 'you got rejected becase you went into boring mode after the open. Never ask her what she does for work or what her hobbies are etc'

I wonder if in truth there are actually zero rules when it comes to game?

Maybe rejection just means you aren't her type?

Well OP remember. Women are only ok with when guys they are attracted to approach them, so she was always attracted before even said anything. If she wasn’t into you, you probably would’ve come off as a “creep”. Good job being confident, but I believe that waiting for choosing signals is still more effective

Brother I go to a nerdy cafe every week and can talk to almost anyone in there as they are all super friendly. Some new arty girls show up and I just asked what they were drawing and what they were doing was legitimately great! Asked about it then went about playing games with friends, low and behold one of the staff told me they had been asking for me when I wasn't there.

As you have said, just be a genuine gentleman and people will respect that!
