Weird to go on a picnic with a person you barely know. You have watched way too many romantic comedies. It’s too much and cheesy…
What’s next?
A bunch of musicians playing a romantic song in the background too? A chocolate box, and some flowers? This ain’t the 19th century.
It’s a first date, it’s a stranger, not the 10th date and a person you have already kissed with.
Better to just ride bikes together or play basketball or something more casual, but bringing food, drinks, plates,… The kind of thing that sounds better in your head than in practice.
It’s too much with basically an stranger. Save that for future dates.

I'm sorry you feel eating together outdoors for a first date is weird. I see nothing wrong with this as a first date. You sound like you're 13 if you think most girls are going to just "ride bikes" or "play basketball". That sounds better in your head than it does in practice. What's next? Are they gonna sit on your front porch and maybe hold hands at the spring dance?
I'd rather brain surgery be the first date than play a pick-up game of basketball with a dude or ride bikes, both of which almost by their nature prevent us talking and almost certainly do not include having a good time and assume a rather sporty nature that most women don't have. It almost doesn't even sound like you want to date a woman to me.
Eating together and chatting is pretty normal as is doing so outdoors. This is just that minus someone else cooking. It's not too much, it's perfectly fine and dandy.
If he made our first date basketball, there is no first date. I'm assuming he thinks I'm a dude and is gay or he's 13 and I'm not a criminal.

About the 13 year old thing… The guy asking this is literally a teenager, so yes seems suitable for a date what i described.
You sound like a 40 year old woman who has forgotten how to have fun, and thinks that a movie like Notting Hill is the peak of romance and that being too serious to be playful on a first date is somehow masculine behaviour.
What’s wrong with holding hands if you like the person and the feeling is mutual? Yes holding hands in a bench, and flirting and looking into each other’s eyes is completely fine in a date, so yes that should come next.
Just because no one touches you anymore, doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t do it when the feeling is consensual and mutual.
If you’d rather be at a brain surgery than doing some fun game or physical activity, that tells me you are lazy and boring person who probably doesn’t take care of herself and isn’t in a good condition to be desired by a man, which means the guy should probably not be in a date with you.

It’s all in the execution. This is a go to. You want a public place with lots of people. When you don’t know a woman very well yet you can scare her with a secluded event like this. Grab a few plastic kites or a football or something silly, grab some sandwiches and a bottle of wine or something and make it work. Every dude she dates is usually cookie cutter. Dinner. Dinner and a movie. Drinks. Do something cool. Amusement park, picnic, some kind of lesson. Many of these (except the amusement park) are free or cheap. So the pocket looks nice and you don’t look boring.

Just do a coffee date and get tea, Costa about $3 or if you want even cheaper go for a walk/hike for free.
A picnic sounds like a lot of prep, and also a longer time commitment/awkward to leave early so it’s a bigger ask.

If this is an online first date, I don't know. One of best first dates of all time was a picnic date. But I was introduced beforehand by a mutual friend.

Probably different because of the amount of effort and time you put into it. If you’re looking to date them then I would say go for it with the picnic, otherwise it may be a little too over the top for someone you’re just trying to hook up with

I think it’s good, try to structure the date tho so it’s not just done after the meal.
I typically shoot for 2 or 3 independent activities that allow for eye contact and communication and physical touching .
Picnic, walk to bar, then drinks for example.
Shit like that shows that it’s planned, casual, and fun. It also allows for you to talk, get to know each other and flirt.
