On one hand, this was not a cold approach so the line about approaching everyone anytime is not quite applicable here. Everyone was gathered for work which greased the wheels for OP.

In any case, I wanted to point out a couple of key things that were happening here that were very instructive.

Everyone else had now left and it was just us left talking in the park.

For anyone looking to build up calibration, it's very important to note that people do not stay in the park talking with someone unless they want to.

This is a form of feedback that showed OP that she was interested. She could have left when everyone else was leaving. She chose to stay.

She was laughing the whole time.

Obviously most people are not comedians but when people are interested they will find humor in a lot of things even when we aren't trying.

Obviously this is good feedback for OP to have noticed.

So I decided to use a bit of light touch every time she laughed.

OP realized that she seemed interested based on how she was reacting to him, and he decided to test the waters a little more with some light touch.

I think she enjoyed it because she then started to shuffle closer on the bench and complained about being cold.

I said “any closer you should just try and sit on my lap”.

She then got really close and just rested her head on my shoulder and said “that’s better I already feel warmer”.

The girl who's interested will find ways to go along with what the guy is doing. If the guys doing light touch and she likes it, she will respond positively in ways like this.

I would even say that the comment about sitting on his lap is the kind of thing that wouldn't go over well if someone is not interested but she was clearly interested so she overlooked it.

Truth is; approach everyone no matter what.

Confidence is important and it's good to reinforce it.

That said, absolute rules are a bad idea, especially in social interactions. It's not always going to be a good time to approach. Like if a girl is clearly in a hurry and/or has earphones on.

While it's important to find confidence to take action, it's also important to try and pay attention as closely as you can to the people you're interacting with. Calibration skill is necessary to know when it's not a good time.

Let's be absolutely clear here, OP showed good calibration in this interaction from the moment he opened the interaction. He was paying attention to her feedback and reacted accordingly.

If you're unsure, then go for it but then be prepared to back off if it turns out to not be a good time.

Another relevant topic now that the pandemic is hopefully winding down: it's incredibly valuable to do whatever you can to engineer social situations for yourself.

Look up social groups on Facebook.
A lot of these groups meet regularly. And their events are posted publicly for a reason.

You increase your chances if you expose yourself to more people as OP did at this work meet-up.
