For those who don't understand, two lessons to be had from this post:
If you're confident, and project that confidence, people will ride along with you and your plan, and things will go smoothly. If you don't act confident, without a plan, people will opt out for a more secure option.
[–]pounds_not_dollars 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And on the other end of the spectrum, the more certain someone is of their idea or action and the more confidence in their demeanor, the more likey we will just accept that what they are doing is right and not questionable. This works with even crazy or unexpected things, people just see your level of faith in yourself and assume it must be right.

It's incredibly easy for people (e.g. girls) to pick up whether you're confident or not
How does this work with the good-old "fake it till you make it"?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I look at "fake it till you make it" as practicing confidence. In many ways, confidence can be thought of as a skill.
(There are many downsides to viewing confidence as a skill, but those aspects do exist, at least IMO.)
Like, when you first start playing basketball, you're probably not gonna make in any shots. But you keep trying. And eventually, you get better and better as you put in the practice.

Most of the time people aren't trying to look beneath the surface. If you're trying to exude (false) confidence, people won't stop and wonder if it's genuine. They'll just go with it. It's easy for them to tell when you're really unconfident when you stumble over your words and stutter and sound unsure.
[–]zephyrprime -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Simple. They can see right through your fake it till you make it. Whoever said that FITYMI would ever get you success? Nobody. It's only supposed to be a stopgap measure for until you get real confidence.

Just stabbing a guess here, but I'm thinking the lack of confidence disconnected the logic circuits in his brains saying "I'm willing to wait all afternoon to get a haircut", and instead just instantly turned him off without him even having to think about it. Ergo, when a guy approaches a girl in a non-confident way, she doesn't even have to think about it before being turned off. Right, OP?

Yes.
[–]zephyrprime 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There's definitely no thought involved. It's all just reflex.

These are the things you begin to notice when you start to understand the game.
This is such a great post, so many principles we learn we suddenly see in real life. When you see this sort of rule in forums, book etc they make logical sense. Then you see, understand and apply them to real life and they solidify. After this you will begin using them to your advantage.

Well, by that logic, girls are more testosterone-driven than we are, as far as the need for strong decisions and confidence are concerned..
or are they?
[–]__JeRM 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think it's more along the lines of trusting someone by using confidence levels as a barometer.
[–]MasonJarTeaDrinker 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Crazy, something so simple yet so important, GREAT observation bro, really makes me think about how I should impose myself and say what I want and be confident while doing it.

Am I the only one lost in how the OP came up with this conclusion? You're not wrong but this instance doesn't seem to lead to that. Please explain.
[–]Anaron 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He realized it by experiencing something similar from the girl's perspective. When guys make an approach in an not-so-confident manner, it turns girls off.

I don't mean to sound stupid but I don't really understand this post at all
[–]Leftieswillrule 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
His point was that the girl's lack of confidence turned him off to the point where he didn't even consider waiting. It put him in the shoes of a woman approached by an unconfident man.

Well, at least you didn't mean to.
[–]zephyrprime 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
"BE SURE OF YOURSELF and BE CONFIDENT" How do you do those things if you're a person who isn't good at doing those things?
[–]sakurafice 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
read self help books, read the material on the side bar stay on the journey of self improvement :)

Fake it till you make it.

Fake it until you become it. :)
[–]guitartablelamp 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
...hence, the well-known phrase, fake it till you make it. That's what it means.
[–]Voicy 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
To a degree, but I was just paraphrasing the TED talk focussing on becoming it rather than mastering to pretend.

Yeah I agree, that was really stupid of you. 20 minutes is nothing, most people wait longer. I have a lot of confidence issues but if she said that I would have quickly said, "alright, sounds good."
[–]__JeRM 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think you're missing the point...
[–]guitartablelamp -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No I get your point, I'm just amazed that you dropped your entire goal plan for the day because somebody other than you wasn't "confident." It doesn't sound like she was lacking integrity as much as she just made a waiting time off the top of her head because she has a boring job. She didn't care if you left or stayed. It says much more about your situation that you let her mood dictate your desire to get a haircut.

I would have just sat right down and started talking to her while I was waiting. Whats her story and all
[–]__JeRM 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
On a scale of 0 to 1, she was a "would not bang."
[+]ohgodwhatis -9 points-8 points-7 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Just say you didn't find her attractive; why does everyone in here talk about other people like they are sub-human?

Everyone make way for the tone police!

See? Anyway, feel free to tone police my tone policing, but we both know you are a hypocrite.

While I agree with your post, I would have waited for a quality haircut, if the barber was good and you knew it. I have a barber I go to every 2 weeks or so. I show up a bit early than normal (~15 minutes) and during that time I either play pool or socialize with others. I've made a few friends that way, met a couple girls, and enjoyed my time. Later I got a great haircut.
While you have a great post about confidence, but I guess the moral of my story is I surely hope you find a good barber soon! A quality barber is a great thing to have.
