This is the first thing I learned when I started PU. No... looks doesn't matter for a man. This is not an opinion, it's a biological fact, and there are multiple scientific studies to back it up.

Being well groomed and well dressed is required, but what you look like doesn't matter much because women use a different set of criteria to evaluate men as potential mates. I have seen master PUAs that are definitely below average in looks pull some amazing shit.

Personal experience: Good looks gives you a 15-30 second advantage at the beginning. I have to fight really hard for the first 15-30 seconds, but after that it's much easier. So good looks definitely gives you an advantage in clubs and bars... but I'm playing for the long haul :-)

Your value and self-confidence is more important, assuming you mean average-looking by average and not an AFC.

Obviously what i said above is not true at all.

There is more to life than how good looking your partner is, i can't tell you the amount of average girls i wouldn't have minded keeping around in my life and how many "hotter" girls are so fucking boring.

Assuming that women are also human (hint: they are) they also have a list of priorities when it comes to the people they want to spend their time with and im sure there is more to the list other than "Is he very handsome".
