Yes, it does seem pretty shitty to try to pick up someone who is emotionally distraught when you could just go to the bar across the street.

Well said! This was my thinking too. Just curious if it had ever been attempted before.

Unless they're really dying to give you their number.
[–]Anth741 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No worries, man. I'm sure it has been attempted, and it probably high a higher success rate, when people are upset their defenses are down. I found this in /r/all, I'm not sure about "the communities" look on it, but I do know that when my grandpa was teaching me about hunting he had always told me how important it is to respect the sport.
All this being said, I assume the skills here teach one how to make another person feel comfortable, perhaps using those skills would be admirable.

I've picked up girls at funerals before. It's not really the best time to do so.
1) The mood is somber, so, if you start busting out some cocky-funny, I take nothing seriously routine, you're in for destroying your relationship with your boss, and you're a jackass, so, don't.
2) Don't even make approaches during the funeral or the viewing. You're a jerk if you do. That's private, reflective, emotionally-vulnerable time. You're likely to be asked to leave, get your ass kicked, or just annoy someone, at best.
3) There's usually some kind of drinking or partying after the viewing but prior to the funeral. This is your best shot (at least in my experience). If you are outright with hitting on girls at a funeral, you're dead in the water and dead to everyone there. Don't make a jackass out of yourself. You're going to need a delicate touch. The next best place is the wake. On the one time that I did this smoothly (others kind of did, too, it was college, a student we knew died, so, there were lots of emotional drunk college kids, myself included), I met the girl at a party the night before and hung out with her at the wake.
4) The other side of all of this is that funerals remind us that life is finite, that we need to get out and live right now, because it will all eventually end. So, yeah, girls will be looking to find a guy, to make a mistake, to live life in the moment. This is especially true if the person who died wasn't elderly, as in the case of a car accident or the like.
5) Whatever you do, don't try to move in on a girl who is crying. Don't make a move on someone who clearly has emotional problems related to the death. People in that state of mind are not looking to meet someone new. Sure, if a girl comes up to you, whatever. However, this is a fine line, because you're looking to be more emotionally-supportive than normal. You're going to have to do friend-zone stuff that you'll probably assume is AFC stuff. If you start kino-escalating or something, you're going to get decked in the face because you deserve it.
6) Seriously, though, WTF. Wrong place to try to pick up chicks.
7) Trade numbers. If she wants sex, she'll escalate in this situation. Your job is to be the strong rock guy, the guy who sees through death and celebrates life. The guy who just came to emotionally support his boss who is off elsewhere. Don't even try to isolate her. Again, if she wants to isolate, she will. If she sees you pushing for some alone time, you're dead in the water. As far as numbers are concerned, that's for pretty close to the end of your time together. This isn't a club. There is no, "well, we're having a great time, maybe I can get your number and we can do this again sometime." This is more of, "I feel like we bonded, maybe we can hang out again sometime?" Don't even make it an obvious date at the funeral. Also, don't use the wording I used there. It's too heavy-handed. Seriously, everything is stepped down at a funeral. This is not the club. This is not a place to be high-energy. You are not trying to open a set by being happier than they are.
8) Honestly, if you are at a point where you are working your game, learning, and need to use routines and such, a funeral is not your venue. The only reason I ever picked up a girl at a funeral is because it was a time in my life when women just kind of were pulled into my gravitational field.
I feel kind of dirty for downloading all of that to you. Anyway, I briefly dated a girl I met at a funeral. Again, lousy place to pick women up, so cool it on acting big, peacocking, cocky-funny, "not giving a fuck," and making it obvious that you're putting the moves on girls. This is about a certain natural cool confidence and a calm strength. This isn't a night club, it's not even the supermarket.

Assume attraction and escalate, until you get rejected.

Of all the places...c'mon there are plenty of other venues to game.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Out of all places, why the fuck would you want to pick up at a funeral?
[–]Robobvious 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
When dealing with the death of a close friend or family member some people experience an urge to do something that makes them feel alive. Be it exercising, sex, thrill seeking, etc.
Edit: Also OP, I think if it just so happened that you met somebody at the funeral it would have been fine. But since you asked ahead of time it's more like you're planning to go pick someone up at a funeral, and it being a conscious plan of action as opposed to a random occurrence makes it scummier.

Just meet them, but I would only #-close. Also, make sure it's not with someone too close to the deceased person, that would just be kind of wrong imo
