tl;dr: Don't hit on them until you've won them over. Complimenting them will only make them think their too good for you. Instead focus on conversation, look them in eye, ask them questions, listen, and understand.

I've said this for the past 80 years and I'll continue to say it: random grinding is fuckin fine. It's your attitude and approach to it that makes the difference.

This is an example of why when I say "random" grinding, I mean RANDOM grinding, not something where you talk to a girl and then grind, not something where you cautiously walk up and wait for some sort of signal that won't come. I mean random-ass grinding. I'm talkin Jersey Shore douchebag shit.

Anyway, I think you already know that it was totally awkward. You asked how she was doing, which isn't terrible but also isn't great. Then you asked her name- again, not horrible, but pretty standard, usual shit. Then for some weird reason you went for a side grind (what the fuck is that?) 3 seconds after making a casual introduction. I'm not Sherlock Holmes or anything, but I'd say that's where you went wrong.

Overall though, and this is something else I've said for 1000 years and will continue to say: Don't do direct approaches in a bar/club environment. Unless it's closing time. Otherwise, the girl's most likely there with friends, most likely plans on being there for a while, most likely just wants to enjoy herself, and most likely has a bitch shield up. Direct approaching (at least verbally) is like the opposite of what you want to be doing. You really won't set yourself apart with that. So instead you open with a tease or something else that's situational, nonchalant, and confident. And if you're doing shit like that, you don't want to be dancing with her 3 seconds later- that doesn't make sense. If you open by talking, then continue talking. Invite her to dance, or bring her over to the dancefloor or whatever- but unless you're saying "Let's dance," your opener is meant to lead into a conversation, not a dance.

Tell me what the fuck this side-grinding shit is though.
