Congrats on conquering your approach anxiety. So, I hit on women in the gyms regularly, and women always have headphones in. You do not begin speaking until you have their full attention. They may not take both earbuds out, but if they take one out that means you have their attention. Talking to them before they have at least one earbud out lowers your perceived value to them.

When you approach, always approach from an angle where they can see you. Ideally, you would want to approach them directly, so head on. Never approach from behind (for various reason), and try to never approach while walking side by side (it's very hard to get their attention side by side when they're moving). So, if you can't approach directly from the front, try to approach at an angle at which they can see you coming, so like a 45 degree angle, or if you are side by side always be walking in front of them so you can establish eye contact.

Ideally, you'd want he person you're approaching to be standing still/ not moving because it makes the approach much easier.

Headphones in are a universal sign for 'don't fucking talk to me unless it's an emergency or I know you'.

Sure, you can ignore that and press on, but you are starting the interaction with her first thoughts about you being 'this man is socially r-worded, or is prepared to ignore my wishes whenever he feels like it'. Quite a tough battle.
