There are a couple things.

A lot of this board is all about positive mindsets and "faking it till you make it". This can be highly useful, and I would certainly look into that sort of thing and employ it. Secondly, rather than faking it, try to do some things that are difficult and challenging. Remember: failure is part of success. The more you do, the less you will feel needy and insecure. Think about it: Remember when going to soccer practice away from your mom was a super stressful thing? Now, imagine doing that? Piece of cake. Meeting girls is the same. So, I guess what I am saying is that one way to avoid coming across as needy is by faking it/ hiding it, or just not being needy. Relationship involves a huge amount of projection from the people involved. You see a girl, but you don't really know her. You fall in love with her image, her symbol. What is this symbol? It is a beauty that will save you from the hardship and suffering that you know awaits you in the future. But, the more you are alive in this world, the more you interact with others, you will see that the image that you fall in is just bullshit, and that you don't need it. Have patience, and don't beat yourself up. Go easy on yourself. Life is tuff and we are all just getting started. God speed.

Definitely not. It's not about you are not supposed to care. It's about choosing what to care about. Time is a limited resources, the difficult part is to choose what to give a fuck about. Life can be pretty rough if you give a fuck about the wrong things.

A direct opener and complement is recommended because it shows intent and it gets you out of your comfort zone. But you're right you are showing your hand a bit fast and giving away some of your power right at the start, it's not the perfect opener, but it does work. You can build off it though and offset the drawbacks a few different ways.

One way is to qualify her. Something like

"Hey you're really cute, I had to come over here and find out if your interesting to talk to"

Another is to disqualify yourself.

"It must be difficult to be as cute as you are, I bet you get weirdos like me trying to hit on you all the time."

Then there's just a basic push pull

"Hey you're pretty cute, but you look like you might be trouble"
