Very important.

Start out with a light grin/smirk, show your teeth a little when you’re shaking their hand/meeting them. Combined with solid eye contact, it creates a good vibe and positive tension in the conversation.

Some PUA's say to absolutely NOT smile, and to look more serious and cool.

Some say to ABSOLUTELY smile and that it's essential.

Should usually smile on the approach most of the time. You're trying to be friendly and disarming on the approach, after that you can do whatever you feel. Could you imagine if some random person started talking to you and had a serious expression on their face? You'd be skeptical and like wtf does this person want.

Depends on your approach. If its a serious venue you don't have to smile, such as in a museum where you're doing small talk over a painting.

Your voice modulation is important, because nervousness can be transmitted to her in your voice, whether through unintentionally raising the pitch or "warbling" where you are obviously nervous. A relaxed guy talks freely and confidently without being boisterous or intruding.

Not really. It just seems like that.

At least in pop culture, the coolest guys are ones who look aloof and indifferent.

But smiling makes you seem more fun and approachable.

You're talking about two simultaneously existing paradigms here.

Some people have baggage and blockage about actually connecting. Those people often find themselves drawn to play the role of someone who is:

A.) Unavailable. The cool, aloof and indifferent.
Or someone who tries to be B.) Awesome Enough That They Can Make The Unavailable Open Up.

There are issues with either of these roles. Both lead to dissatisfaction and unnecessary drama.

The fun and approachable people are just people who've managed to work through enough of their garbage that they're open to connecting. And it's not BECAUSE of smiling. Smiling is just a symptom.

Note: Some people under the B category above are going to come off like the "fun and approachable" ones. Which will be true, to a point. But they'll be ironically so drawn to the Unavailable that their apparent openness to everyone is largely an illusion because they're really only truly open to the Unavailable.

What BozoCardozo & hunter32tz said. Practice in the mirror. When you pass reflective surfaces, do a face check and posture check. Keep at it and it will get easier over time.
