You really should be talking to as many people, male and female, in class as possible even if it's the people within the vicinity of where you sit. If you only approach the women in the class with the intent of asking them out you will be the creeper. Embrace rejection and life becomes much easier, you won't always be #1, you won't always get the girl, you won't always get the laugh, deal with it and things become easier.

If you want to spend time with this girl ask her out, it might change the dynamic if you're weird about it but if you take take rejection like it's no big deal and treat her as a friend nothing will be messed up. To that point you'll know where you stand in her eyes as well, a friend or a potential romance.
