Ask questions that are the complete opposite of this. Girls are used to questions like these because they're the 'safest' that guys go for. I always say the first thing on my mind, usually it's something like 'What are you doing here?' or 'Why are you on instagram right now instead of dancing'. Anything at all that they aren't expecting is more likely to get a response than basic questions. A good go-to is make an assumption or a question about something that they are doing.

So far I've figured out the difference is business questions run down facts and what you need to be doing is eliciting feelings, teasing etc. I think one thing people don't notice is asking her business questions not only bores / turns off her but it also bores / turns off you.

Shake her hand, hold it too long, move a little closer, look into her eyes - you could say your name is Daffy Duck at that point it won't matter because your intentions would be conveyed. Then again I'm just getting back into the swing of things and this approach will get blown out 90% of the time - which is actually good since it means I don't waste time on the chicks who aren't into me sexually.

Just have a humorous observation prepared. When you meet and greet, mention something odd or unusual that you noticed today.

Don't ever go into interview mode. That's a date killer.

Asking a couple of those questions to start off isn't a problem, but simply asking them in rapid fire mode like an interview is. Ask one or two GOOD questions and then use the information she gives to make the conversation go somewhere. Tease her a bit on the information she gives, go deeper into whatever the subject she mentions is, etc. Show that you listened to what she said and do things that elicit emotional responses. Also share related things about yourself (no matter how loosely related) in a fun manner. Relating and connecting to her with the information she gives you is the name of the game.

Do that and a good conversation will quickly unfold.

Learn to ask better questions, and really listen to her answers.

Ask open questions. (questions that don't end in a yes, no, maybe, fine, ok, etc)

The goal is to ask her about her. And to listen to her answers and to try and get more information about that topic. Find something interesting she is holding, wearing, or doing, and ask her to tell you about it. Ask her about her hobbies, or what she does for fun. Not like an interview, more like you are really interested.

The goal is to get to her dreams, goals, and accomplishments. From here you can maybe make an emotional connection with her and find out:

Who she is.

Why she does the things she does.

The "why" is the big part. So just ask her about her. Girls love to talk about themselves, so it shouldn't be too hard. Listen to her answers...and think about a deeper question, or story you have that can tie it together.

lame questions like "What do you do?" or "Where are you from?"

They are not lame questions, if you build upon the answers she gives you. Maybe you ask her what she does for fun. Or what is the most exciting thing she ever did... but you might need to start with some basic questions to get things moving.

You: "Where are you from?"

Her: "[a small town in] Ohio"

You: So why are you here in [big city]

Her: "I came here for school"

You: "whats your major" BAD BORING QUESTION

You: Oh...so how did it feel to move to a big city from a small town?" MUCH BETTER QUESTION!

Her: "It felt great...I always wanted to get out of my little pow-dunk town...and I wanted to see the world"

You: "Very cool, so what exciting things have you done since you arrived?"

See the difference in asking a "how does it feel [feelings - emotional] types of questions?

So now you learned that she is an outgoing type of person who wants to see the world.

or...you could now know that her major was communications....

Those aren't superficial questions. It's not like she's asking how much money you make. But if those questions intimidate you, you need to find a different crowd.
