How to avoid interview mode?

The opposite of interview questioning is cold reading. Make an assumption about her instead of asking a question.

I notice when I am taking a girl on a date, I'll often run out of things to say and then if she isn't offering anything I'll just go into interview mode, fishing for something interesting to talk about or something we have in common.

First off, if she isn't offering anything, that isn't your problem. Sometimes the chemistry just isn't working.

Secondly, what you do instead of "interview mode" is not make assumptions about her. Both of these things constitute NOT listening to her.

What you do is go deeper with the questions you've been using.

Ask a question.
Stop thinking about what you'll say next and listen to her while she's talking. Information is power and you need all your brain power to process what she's saying.
Once she stops talking, then take a second to think about what she just said. Then answer her by getting deeper into the emotions or motivations of what she just told you.

I tend to do best when I can make a girl laugh or smile at something but it's hard to pull out of thin air.

Entertaining is not connecting. You don't need to be a clown. You just need to pay attention.

Don't be afraid of silence either. Cold reading is great, but she should be as invested in the encounter as you.
