I see a lot of posts on here about approach anxiety. I usually have very little anxiety about approaching. In situations that are a little more risky, I usually enjoy the adrenaline rush anyway.

My problem comes in more after the approach. Things start off alright, but it seems like I only "break the ice" about 20% of the time. The rest of the time, a girl will give me basic responses when required but not really go beyond that-- very icy. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with my appearance (I'm above average looking, especially in my location), but everything to do with my approach and how the girl feels about the conversation. It seems like I only make a girl feel comfortable enough to open up and participate in a conversation a small percentage of the time, and then the rest of the time it's like pulling teeth to get a girl to respond.

Most of my opportunities to meet girls are in Spanish, which is my second language, so it can be a bit more of a challenge for me to think quick and speak smoothly. That might have something to do with it, but I figured talking it out on here and getting some feedback might help me figure out how to approach conversations and break the ice better with a new girl.

So, what do you do to break the ice when you meet someone new?
