As a shy and timid guy myself, I am often scared of approaching girls even if I like them fearing they'd be uncomfortable by me.

But if the lady takes an initiative, I know that she'll not be uncomfortable by me and I can open up a bit more.

Approach him.
Ask him for any help.
Offer him coffee/snacks in exchange for help after gym.
Ask any random question about his body/habit.

Usually men are not used to the attention, care and appreciation (not trying to sexist here). So, when you pass any comment that shows any of these, they do not know how to respond (I can recall so many incidents that I later recognised as first move by girls).
