It's a good start but you need to build from there. Anything is good as long as it works and makes sense in the situation.

I've opened with everything from a hand shake to a hug to putting my hands on her waist (mind you that was at a club)

If done properly it's even better because you can see how she feels about you: shake her hand and keep it there, but not squeeze. Turn your palm slightly upwards and let her hand rest in yours. If she keeps her hand longer it's good. Trust me hand-shaking is insignificant in pick up. You are better off listening to what she is saying and finding genuine interesting/excitement over the subject at hand than worrying about petty things like a hand shake.

Handshaking is awesome. There are whole routines based on handshakes, like the classic "Milking the Intro." I wrote a lot about this in a post "Kino for Cowards: Easier Escalation."
