I've listen to the Blueprint Decoded. Tyler Durden talks about the "Pick Up Pilgrimage" Anyone have an experience like this?

I've traveled a lot in my life, and it is a great experience. Here's why:

When you settle down in one place, you usually end up surrounded by people who share your general assumptions and perspectives on socializing. Constant exposure to one perspective has very much the same effect as propaganda; it becomes easy to make mistake of assuming that there is a "correct" perspective. Suddenly, you begin to judge people based on how close or distant their behaviour deviates from your pre-conceived "norm". It leads to a narrow outlook on social issues and great difficulty with accepting new ideas, new behaviours, and new people.

Traveling exposes you to new ideas, to people who disagree with your basic assumptions. When you're in a faraway country and you suddenly discover that YOU are the minority, it really changes the way you approach social interactions. You find yourself having to adapt, to become more attentive, to become more flexible in adapting to local mores, and it trains you to connect with the people you're with and remove judgmental habits.

Obviously, this does wonders for your ability to relate with people from your own country or town who, upon close examination, often aren't as similar to you as you initially thought.

Travel and meeting people who have different assumptions than you is a fantastic way to learn how to socialize.

Depends. I went to a place with a different native language and I just felt much more isolated and anti-social. But if you are fluent a lot of people are excited to meet Americans and I feel like it'd be a great social experience. On a side note, what do you think of the Blueprint? I'm maybe 3 hours into it and I feel like I don't find it nearly good as all the reviews I've read.

You also learn how to read people SO WELL too. If there is anything that I got from my 6 months abroad is the skill to read people. When there is a language barrier between you and the person you pick up on their body language. After a while of doing it for a long time you start to notice the emotions and motivation of people without them even saying a word.

Alcoholics Anonymous has a slang phrase for this, "doing a geographic." It is an attempt to change your life by moving to a new geographic location, under the belief that changing your environment will break old habits and change your life. But unfortunately, wherever you go, there you are. Your old habits are still part of you. The reason AA has slang for this is that it is an almost universal experience of addicts running away from their problems and it never solved a damn thing.

You should deal with your problems within yourself, instead of expecting change to come from an external source.

I think part of the reason that I moved to another country was for the opportunity to reinvent myself in a new place. It's easier to fail in front of people you don't know very well and who you may never see again. And, well, that is what this whole seduction path is about, if you ask me, lots of failure. But, after a year, I'm not the same person. It has been a "pilgrimage."

It will make you more interesting and give you some great stories for sure. Hostels are also a great place to meet people and work on your social skills. It's a good and natural way to slide towards the extrovert end of the spectrum, but you still have to push for it and get out of your comfort zone. Be willing to meet people and it will help you a lot. Plus you'll probably meet a lot of British/Irish/Australian chicks that will dig your accent.
