Question: How to keep conversations going, turn them into deep and meaningful conversations with people in general?

Background: I am an extroverted, open and interested young adult currently pursuing a bachelor degree from a top business school and am building a business with a great team, well known clients on the side.

Situation: I like to work a lot and love things/ people that are out of the ordinary. Recently I had the chance to meet many new people (exchange) and what I found was that I rarely connect/ vibe with these people. I feel like the majority start talking and I immediately feel - no this will not be a great conversation nor develop into a friendship! (I am really open for that!) Of course there are also the exceptions of people that are passionate about a topic with which keeping a conversation up is interesting, demanding and fun. However, with most I feel like they have nothing to tell about theirselves but at the same time are not interested, curious to learn more about the other party (myself) - thus keeping the conversation going seems non value adding for me. When I feel this way, I immediately shut down my openness, hear the other one out and then wish them a nice day. I do this since I already feel I would know that I will gain nothing from this conversation.

It’s the same for men and woman, though I really lack in terms of being patient for people to be interesting. With woman it’s obviously often the looks that attract but they obviously don’t help the conversation nor your character.

Question: How does one need to behave to extract and spark the interest of the other party as well as does not shut down but give the other party the chance to open up and show curiosity?
