Music as a conversation topic

I think music is a terrible conversation topic, unless you're both in a venue to see the same band, so you have the same interests.

Music is like politics, everyone has strong opinions and it often isn't one you share. Except in politics, you've basically got one range from conservative to liberal, while in music, you've got a bazillion different types of music so your odds of finding someone that shares your interests are much lower. I like The Ramones, Johnny Winter, Gilbert & Sullivan opera, and the Everly Brothers. Do you think I have ever found someone that shares my musical interests?

A better conversation topic is making music. Of course this only works if you play an instrument. I can get women to connect with my passion for music, without ever going into the type of music I play.

Music is a GREAT topic imo, especially if you end up sharing a lot of shit in common.

I disagree that it is like politics. Unlike politics where you have a few distinct sides, most girls I meet have diverse music taste. I don't know a lot of people who goto sleep thinking 'omg i can never be with a guy who likes rap music.' I am sure they exist, but they are in the far, far minority and even then, i am not sure how strong they will act on that thought.

It is almost hard not to find some overlapping music taste. It's not as important that you all like the same music or even majority; it's better if you find a band or two, or a song or two that both of you dig.

I connect with almost all girls on indie music. I throw out a few bands that aren't very mainstream. Turns out most girls dig one or two of em and we have this instant commonality over some music most of the world hasn't even heard of.

It's a great topic. You can address all the objections against music as a conversation topic by not getting hung up on shit you don't share in common. Push the conversation forward by sharing less known bands and the emotions they make ya feel. And if all you like is the top40 chart, every girl has at least a few songs they dig from the top40 chart even tho it's hip to hate on billboard.

Musicologist here. Surprisingly I NOW tend to avoid at all costs conversations about music with people I don't know very well. The reason is things get bad really fast... I'll give you an example of a possible scenario that I've seen countless times: Birthday dinner/party of a friend at his house, inner circle of friends + couple of new girls that no one ever met except for the person that brought them there. As the evening goes on it can happen that i start to talk about music with 3 or 4 people, I'm really extrovert and I love to talk to people, my friends are interested in music too (they play instruments and so on) so they always ask me about things, what is this, what is that, why is this music so good? what thought people during the medieval age about music? etc etc... Before you know it I'm around the iPod speakers with 10 people listening to what I say and having fun (I put a lot of jokes and impressions in my "lectures"), I play some musical examples and explain what we are earing etc. This is where everything goes downhill FAST: the new girls get angry pretty quick, they start screaming and bitching, in one case one even attacked me and pushed me over to grab my ipod and throw it away so she could play house music through her iphone. Now, my friends are extremely needy and outcome dependant so they inevitably always have the worst woman around just so that they can get laid (when you are so extremely needy you don't attract normal and nice people), so this has probably a part in it, I've also met a lot of women who show a lot of interest for what I do and are fascinated about it, but as a general rule I would avoid musical topics... A LOT of young people puts a lot of frustration, anger, unhealthy associations with groups and styles through popular music... it's like politics as someone as said... you could have the chat of your life till 5AM but you are more likely to open up a pandora box and being fucked (not in the way you wanted heheh)
