You knew talking to everyone was going to be recommended, because it's the right advice. Go out of your way to talk with everyone. Sit next to new people at lunch, talk with the people you order food from, talk with your teachers, talk with the people sitting next to you, EVERYONE.

Do it enough and it's not a big deal anymore.

Also invest a lot more time talking to girls you are not interested at all in, fat ugly frumpy motherfuckers, then reflect on what you said to them. Say the same thing to the hot chicks.

Heh, you know what's funny? Canned material was created exactly and specifically for situations like this. You don't need canned openers, but canned transitions and DHV stories would really give you something to talk about until you get to another natural conversational topic.

Its all in the segue! Situational openers are my favourite kind (it keeps things fresh and fun) and the trick to keep the conversational ball rolling after opening is linking in new topics of conversation when the old ones are getting stale.

In your example a possible next line could be how you used to know a guy in your college who would pretend to be gay to pick up women. If they respond to this you could then ask them if they are feeling some kind of irresistible magnetic urge toward the dancing guy and run with that for a little while. If not you could segue to something that happened in your class the other day. If after a few segues they still haven't replied then perhaps its time to eject politely.

I can understand the attraction of keeping a conversation going by questions but as you said it begins to feel like an interrogation and that is not comfortable for either party. The real money (as said by Juggler, i think) lies in avoiding questions* and just making statements that reflect who you are and what you find important eg "i love coming to parties like this. It really gives me a chance to unwind for a few hours, catch up with friends and have fun conversations with interesting people". You can then just STOP TALKING and look at her while smiling, and 99.99% of the time she will respond with something. You know your chat fu is working when conversation feels easy and she takes advantages of some of those pauses to ask YOU questions about yourself, which you should always reward with some honest and interesting information about yourself.

Oh, and if you do go down the compliment/neg path, make sure it is something she has control over like her personality, fashion sense, etc. I would stay away from body parts until you know her a little better (for all you know she was teased with "four-eyes two-chins" when growing up).

*Especially the following four: Whats your name, Where are you from, What do you do, and How long are you here for. All of these questions have been asked to them A MILLION times before and when they respond they are in autopilot mode, which is not good for anybody.

Step 3: lock in

You did step 1. Just keep plowing. "Stack threads," just switch to a new conversation topic once people are listening to you. Forget transitions between topics, just cut off one thread and start another. Just keep the conversation moving, you'll be doing about 90% of the talking at first. Once you have them listening to you, you have hooked them. The next step is to "lock in," get yourself physically positioned into the set, like sitting with them or putting yourself in the Alpha position like against the wall with everyone around you.

Transition into conversation.

For example:

Observational transition, eg: "You guys look like you're all really good friends..."
Cheating transition, eg: "You really remind me of..."
Cheating transition #2: "That reminds me of the time..."

There are a tonne of these you can find via google, as long as you don't still believe you're above using canned material.
