Ofcourse everyone's different, so everyone's milage may vary, but maybe we can still discuss this in a general way.

I've been on Badoo/Tinder/etc for a couple years now, and there's always the question about how to open the conversation. In the beginning I've tried opening with profile-specific comments or questions, but I found it to work no better than a canned message. Which, atm, is:

Hey Alice :) how are you

So the way I see it; it's a calibration between overly expressive and needy on the one end, and simple and effortless on the other hand. So the scale goes like;

From "disinterested" to "cringy and needy":

hey

Hey how are you

Hey Alice, how are you

Hey Alice :) how are you

Hey Alice :) How are you?

Hey Alice! :) How are you doing today, everything okay??

So basically I was wondering if even my one smilie in "Hey Alice :) how are you" can come across as cringy and needy. It works okay, but some girls don't respond to it (they could have any reason, I know, but still). But let's discuss what you guys think about how to calibrate your opening message.
