Of course you should show interest! Just show interest in a masculine way. Quit asking questions, quit phrasing everything as wanting permission. Stick it out there, take the risk, lay it on the line and let her know you WANT her, don't say you need her or you are infatuated with her.

It depends on the specific girl you're pursuing.
Showing "less investment" would probably be the better term.

You can still initiate contact, and set up dates, and whatever, but it's almost always a good idea to basically "pretend" as if you don't care very much.

I know it sounds shitty, because on some level, it is. But this is how girls usually interact with guys. Having said that -- it still totally depends on the girl. If you're attracted to that one goth chick, she probably won't care that you're more invested than she is.

You're basically presenting the idea that you're the one who needs to be pursued, and that she needs to put in some effort to win you over. In my experience, it's worked like 99.9% of the time, so that's probably why it's recommended.

But you can still initiate the convos, and initiate the dates, and all that other shit (even then though, don't be afraid to ignore a few texts here and there). But you should also be gauging her reaction -- if she's a cool chick who doesn't play any games and/or doesn't seem to have potential boyfriends, then just plow ahead.

My girlfriend was just reading this response over my shoulder, and while she generally didn't like it, she still basically agreed with it.

You should show interest without seeming sold on her.

You should less invested in the relationship than her.

Basically, she shouldn't be that important to you, but she should know you want to fuck her.
