Rule of thumb: Mirroring.

If she takes 20 minutes to text back, wait 20 minutes and then text her back. If she uses lots of ...'s, add a few of your own for dramatic effect. If she uses lots of smileys, go ahead and use them. But god help you if you find an intelligent woman and text her "How r u doing?"

The problem is when you use humor, girls need the smiley to understand it's a joke. They need a reference to understand if something is funnny.

I used to feel the same way. I overheard my closest female friend talking about how she doesn't think its masculine so I exorcised them from my texting vocabulary.

Fast forward a few years, I've learned that the ladies love that shit. Seriously I use the winky face all the time. It's hard to communicate a truly flirtatious, 'maybe I'm being suggestive, maybe I'm not tone' via text. Slap a winky face on the end of it and she'll know what's up.

Personally, I cringe when I see the ;) face being used.. in any context other than flirting! And if used for flirting, it should be used very rarely.. idk if it's just me but that face makes me read in the entire message attached to it not in a seductive way but rather in a corny/pathetic way. Other smileys are totally fine though :).. just don't over use them Oh and limit your abbreviations.. write properly. The mirroring thing mentioned above is also very good to follow.
