The smiley was originally invented to help people know when a comment was meant to be sarcastic because sarcasm doesn't work well on the internet.

No, but seriously... there are only two smileys you should use: ;) and :) AND they should ONLY be used sparingly, when you either tease or say something sexually inferred.

I tend to put emotes in texts if my face is actually doing that in real life when I'm texting, no idea if thats good or not though

I dont ever use them, use your words to promote what you mean not a emoticon. I have talked to lots of girls who hate it when guys use ;P :) ;) ect... when you really look at it, it seems childish and non-alpha

If i'm texting a girl that uses them excessively I tend to mirror that in a small way. Obviosuly use your better judgement and gut instinct, but I think it comes down to how they are used to communicating and trying to tap into that

Personally, I rarely do. In my opinion, it makes me look goofy, eager to deliver platitudes, and unable to deliver my message in a brief and precise fashion. In short, it makes it look like I'm trying to hard.

Unless I'm being sarcastic or playfully mean, I avoid them.
