Few things. Awkward pauses aren't awkward. Be comfortable with silence.

Confidence is not something you get more of. You just be it. You have to make the decision to be confident.

You tell yourself you're awkward then you're awkward. You should be asking how can you be awkward if you're so confident.

Anyway just talk to the girl man. Get to know her by asking her questions about herself. Don't ask the usual boring shit. Ask something weird and out there. If she could be any animal what would she be and why? Have fun with it. Smile and laugh. Make her smile and laugh. Race her to the end of the block. Cut her off in the middle of her sentence, stop her in her tracks and look her in the eyes and tell her she reminds you of a Pokémon. Don't be afraid to be stupid. Be stupid and embrace it. Girls love guys that act like idiots. They hate guys that are embarrassed for acting like idiots.

Read the side bar and go from there. Have fun with it.

Confidence is being perfectly comfortable with your weaknesses. People think confidence is just being good at everything and not awkward or shy, no.

Awkard and shy? Fine. Own it. Confidence will make your awkward shyness endearing. Confidence is moving ahead despite your fears.

Not saying you are awkward and shy but it is a typical example.

This is easy. Realize that she's in the conversation with you too.

That means if there is a pause, she also feels awkward just like you do. You're both human beings after all.

If you just calm down, chill out, smile about the silence so that she sees that you're comfortable, all of a sudden she will feel the pressure to talk and pick up the conversation.

Trust me, you'll still feel the awkwardness but if you just relax, sit through it and be patient, she will break and try to pick things up.

Sometimes girls will say, "Well this is awkward" to break the silence. To which you can just respond with "Hm. Its alright." then just look at her in comfortable silence again. Eventually she'll be like "Sooo....." and say whatever to pick things up. Then you can let yourself go and be a little more talkative, almost to let her know that all she needed to do was be the one to pick the conversation up.

I even like to start dates with an awkward silence. In my head, I know exactly what to talk about but I purposely stay quiet and just hold eye contact with a playful smile until the girl tries to get a conversation going then I let myself loose. After a few minutes I shut up again. I enjoy watching girls struggle to come up with something to talk about. Its really funny. Hahaha
