As a good fallback, use contextual cues. If you're in a noisy train carriage, make a comment about how much you dislike your commute (she might easily feel the same, then you've got a conversation going...) If you're in a book shop, ask what type of books she's looking to pick up. As long as your question isn't too intrusive - and you need to be the judge of that - you should be fine.

There are 3 elements to every conversation: you, her, and the environment. You have to find the most exciting thing about those 3 things and talk about it. If you were in a bar and a fight broke out, you would obviously talk about that, hopefully saying funny/insightful things. If she says something about herself that you can tell really excites her, focus on that. Etc...

Find something to relate to her on. The less questions the better, find out what you like about her. If she goes to a certain school, do you know anything about that school, do you know anyone that goes there, do you think their team colors are pretty, whatever, just base your responses on what she says, and they should be statements:

Me: So you go to school?

Her: Yeah at University of X

Me: Oh awesome I saw them beat U of Y last weekend, I assume you're a football fan... (now assuming you like football you can start a football based conversation)

Find a way to tie it to something you like or find interesting then you two can share a common topic, and bonding occurs, and you have a great opportunity to display attractive traits.

If you aren't too good at taking cues from her and the environment, don't use them all up right away! Early on, create a focus of conversation on crazy activities you/she totally haven't done, and tease her/make a joke on yourself about it!

For instance, ask if she's been whale watching. Or ask if she's ever tamed a lion. Or ask if she's flown a jet. Or ask if she's a salsa dancer.

When she replies she hasn't/doesn't/isn't, say, "Hm, I didn't think so," and move on to the next subject. This will create an amazing push/pull in the conversation. Works like magic.

Or, even better: If she has done it, she's immediately interesting and has stories to tell you. You get your body language, eye contact, and kino going and you're golden.

Pay attention to her, what she's wearing, how she holds herself, what she seems interested in, etc. Get real specific, it becomes fun to just meet new people!

Read about body language and then you can watch in real time how she's responding to you. It also makes you a better conversationalist because you can exaggerate your body language to drive home various comedic (or serious) effects.

Conversation threading. Just repeat the last few words she said with a rising intonation and she'll naturally elaborate on whatever it was she was talking about.

Oh yeah, it's so easy and it's a great backup plan for those moments that you suddenly draw a total blank. Don't overuse this though or it gets boring.

Oh yeah. Big time boring and you eventually sound like an echolalic.

Oh, and escalate where appropriate.

What do you talk to your guy friends about? What do you talk to anybody about? Talk about those things. What do you browse on reddit besides seddit? Talk about those things. What do you really want to know about her? Talk about those things.

As others have mentioned, comment about things going out wherever you are at the moment. Other tips are talking about a hobby or interest of yours, or one of hers. Always be sure you are calibrating appropriately (i.e. if you see she is bored shitless with the current topic, switch to a new one) etc.
