it 'works' in that it's effectively flirting. (so if she likes you it will help moves things along)

If I may offer a suggestion from the business world: can you replace any of those buts with and?

If you say "but", it means you're going to contradict what you just said. If you say "and", it means you're going to build on it.

From your example:

"You're cute but you're kinda dorky"--> "You're cute and you're kinda dorky."

With the but, it sounds like "kinda dorky" is a bad thing. Now the statement is ambiguous; it's not clear if you like her or not. This sentence could be parsed as "I don't like you." (And maybe I wouldn't want to hang around long enough to find out.) With the and, now "kinda dorky" has been coupled with "cute". It sounds like you're totally into her, and you think that both "cute" and "kinda dorky" are good things.

Let me try your other example:

"I thought I loved you until you said that, but..."

"I thought I loved you until you said that, and..."

I don't know about you, but what my brain fills in for the "but" version is "now I don't love you anymore". For the "and" version, my brain fills in "now I love you even more."

Personally, I'd definitely prefer any of these and statements to a half-compliment with a but neg.

Ah yes, the widely popular manipulation tactic. I promise you, this will not get you meaningful interactions with any woman. It might get her attention for a while, until she realises she deserves better and leaves your ass for a guy that actually appreciates her, without any backhanded comments.
