Of course there's the obvious say there name as you talk to them. In The Game Style uses a memory technique which utilizes alliterations and a pop culture or other reference. If she's a heavy drinker she is Bloody Mary. If she is a beach girl she is Malibu Mary, if she is a geek she is Mary Maddox. You get the idea. I think this is how Style did it.

Obviously, if you're going to drink anyways, go the second route. It's gonna suck not really feeling the "buzz" and having to push that out and grasping your full brain, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

As for mental strategy? Don't fuck up, is all. Pure memorization for me or you be smart about it. "What was your name again? No, I meant your last name silly" or "There a special way to spell your name?" Then proceed to tease them how funny their name can be spelled. Another one that comes to mind, get someone close to you that you actually know or sorta know, and introduce the two. You not only ringed in an audience, showed that you're not a loner, but also got the name

Obviously, nto sure fire ways to get their names without lowering your value as a drunken idiot who forgets everyone's names, but if you put effort into it, getting people to tell their names later isn't hard.

I haven't used this personally, but I hear one easy way is to associate something interesting about them to their name/face (like a unique hobby or talent). Not only does this create conversation and help you remember names, but also allows people to qualify for you (and creates potential negs such as "Awww, that's not interesting at all!")

I make a list in my phone. I go over it / add to it when taking a leak or a lull in between sets. Then after that night I go through and sort them by where and when I met them and I jot down their distinguishing characteristics, in case I run into them again. It doesn't really help if you bump into someone with no time to prep, but I do what I can because I have a terrible memory... Also, I don't drink when I'm out specifically to pick people up. That helps too.

dont be afraid to ask if you forget. repeat the name when you first hear it. do so relatively frequently, it's a little trick from some book (perhaps how to win friends and influence people?) that people love to hear the sound of their name. it also seems to establish a nice rapport, in my experience - you start to over-emphasize the address aspect of the name towards each other and it reinforces the "us against the world" conspiracy game that helps you build rapport and comfort.

nicknames are great too, but i would say they are an extension of the above-mentioned theory.

when it comes to names, i just want to say, i'd have WAY more balls in talking to girls if i had a badass name like Roy or Blair. just sayin.

I remember names easily, but I'm also a name nerd. I read baby name books for fun. I try to match names with meanings. "Your name is Jessica? That's Hebrew for wealthy. Did you grow up rich?" It's a fun trick I use.
