In daygame you have to be sensitive in situations where she cannot leave, e.g. trains, buses, bus stations etc. You have to move very slowly and surgically. She will already be on the defensive since she cannot easily leave, which she could do if you approached her on the street or in a club.

In your specific case, it sounded like you got absolutely no indication she wasn't interested. Everybody's different and cues aren't as obvious as you'd think they are, so I would have stayed a bit longer until she actually said "Listen, I was really hoping to get to read this book" or something like that: that's a blowout, so you need to be respectful of it. If she's laughing, you guys are shooting the shit, it's green light for you.

For scenarios where the girl can easily leave, do not eject until she heavily insinuates it at least a couple of times (e.g. you really should go catch up with your friends), or directly tells you to fuck off. If you eject early you miss out on a lot of learning.

A few observations and questions.

Great job approaching (it takes balls) but it feels like you failed to show intent/interest. If she wasn't giving any negative signals, don't forget to always be escalating.

What were you looking to get out of this?

Why didn't you ask for her number?

Edit: forgot to answer your question. I eject when it is very obvious the conversation is leading nowhere, or her lack of eye contact.
