During conversations, state your intentions well and clear. They could be in the form of a question, or what you'd like to do. This strategy applies to platonic relationships as well. If somewhere during the conversation, you feel that they've avoided/dodged the question or dismissed what you've said, end the conversation and move on. The basis of any relationship is being open to each other and laying the foundation of trust and respect. Avoid people who talk about other people, in any way. It usually means they don't want to build a relationship with you or they lack personality and will be leeching of you in the future.

Always go with first impressions. Don't give second chances and make excuses for them.

If you're in a group situation and are approached by someone, think whether this person has been observing you (male or female gaze) before making contact with you. Yes, it is extremely creepy and a sign that they have an abusive personality. They first size you up, concoct a persona that they think will appeal to you and start a relationship with you based on a false reality.

Other ways to figure out if they're sizing you up is asking you where you live, your job, relationship status, your goals/dreams, etc in a consecutive manner. If you feel like a question is intrusive, take a step back and leave. You don't owe anyone anything. Pretending that you didn't hear them or see them is also a response. Treat people the way you want to be treated, but also treat them the way they treat you.

Note: sizing and vetting are different. Sizing someone up is determining whether there is anything to gain or take advantage of; vetting is determining red flags. Sizing is a red flag.

If you feel like you've been watched or followed, turn around and walk a few blocks back, you might see your stalker but don't engage with them and pretend that you didn't see them.

Power moves- men and women will attempt to establish their superiority in various ways. Superiority, not authority. Any attempt to show superiority (e.g. dominating/deciding your space, time, anything) is a huge sign that they're insecure and have a need for control. Be wary of people who boast names and numbers- it all points to a big ego.

Ways to end a conversation- if it's texting, you don't need to reply. If it's in person, you can do it in a number of ways and simply walking away is totally acceptable. In fact, walking away is sometimes the healthiest thing you can do. You don't owe them anything. You don't owe them anything.

Most importantly, how do you feel around them? If at the first interaction you feel that something is off, don't make any excuses and delete that person from your life. Always trust your feelings.
