Don't know why you got a down vote for asking a question. Yes, it's a thing.
It fits into that whole concept of "alpha" widow forcing to "settle" down with a lesser man in her mind. In this particular case, this woman thinks she's the catch and much better than her boyfriend simply because she makes more money. That is why she told her younger sister that "she dated down."
The guy is rightfully mad. If he's a man who is worth his salt, he would take this as an insult. No man would want to accept that he's someone that she "settled" for. This woman is 32 and going to be 33 soon. Her biological clock is ticking loudly but she still runs her mouth.
