The 77 cents to the dollar exists. It's just been misrepresented. Women's combined salaries average a certain amount, as do Men's combined average salary. Comparing the two comes out to women earning 77 cents to every dollar a man makes.

This is not because women are paid less than men, it's because the average salaries are different. Women are more likely to take lower paying jobs (ex. teachers, esp. elementary to say teaching at a college), less likely to ask for raises (women have been shown to be less assertive/aggressive than men in many studies), and more likely to take time off or not work as much overtime (having children, and the ensuing time off. more likely to work from home, etc.).

Combined this creates the illusion (if you're stupid and don't examine what the data represents) that women are being paid less than men. This is being assumed to mean women are being paid less than men for the same job. Data shows the exact opposite.

I think I read about another study by the US department of labor (during the bush administration), that concluded that a woman doing the exact same job with the exact same experience and other factors earns almost as much as a man (I think it was about 95%, the 5% difference was attributed to a different factors). But the google search shows women organization articles that say women earn less than men. If I find the labor study, I will edit this comment.

I'd recommend the books Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics. The wage gap is tackled in the latter. With the popularity of Freakonomics, the study in Superfreakonomics might have some "cred." Your former classmates might have read Freakonomics and would be more likely to hear what Levitt has to say about the wage gap.
