So, how much damage did women's groups cause to anti-rape activism regarding female-perpetrated abuse?

OK, is anyone else bothered by how they are stereotyping the COVID-19 situation as "women are more effective than men"?

It's not about who can, it's about who do.

[–]Strikester101[S] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Elaborate?

[–]dzkrf 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So what? If they want to keep demonstrating that one must always notice gender, let them.

[–]Strikester101[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Is there any evidence that boys or girls are better programmers than the other?

[–]dzkrf 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it matters. It's a waste of time to get pulled in to the "oh yeah?" "Yeah!" debates. Let the feminists have their reports and studies. Only people of low EQ need to be told that they're superior.

Bit of a loaded question. Out of the general public almost zero girls are suited to become professional coders.

Of programmers that exist, their performance is probably similar. Although there was one vagina-propaganda study that said female programmers' code on Github was of slightly higher quality.

[–]Strikester101[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What makes that study a propaganda again?

I remember what you are talking about, but forgot how it was wrong.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It wasn't "wrong," it just wasn't taken in context and didn't tell the whole story. It was immediately promoted by the mass media as some kind of vagina-power thing.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/02/data-analysis-of-github-contributions-reveals-unexpected-gender-bias/

So some things to note:

  1. They could only identify the gender of 35% of the coders with email addresses. A survey with a <35% response rate would normally be a red flag.

  2. The difference in merge rates wasn't really that big (78.6% vs 74.6%)

  3. Male contributions outnumbered female ones by 20:1. There were about ten times as many men than women with perfect 100% acceptance rates.

  4. I cannot seem to find a peer-reviewed version of this paper?

Some questions you might ask are:

  1. How productive are male vs female coders? Women's code seemed to be accepted more on average. But how much code do they actually output per day? How many pull requests per were accepted per day?

  2. How useful was the code that got accepted?

It’s possible girls generally (not in all cases) are better than boys at this specific skill.

What bothers me is when the data shows an advantage to the girls, the press is all:

“girls are great at this, better than boys”

But if it’s the other way around in some area, the press is like: “Because of sexism/unconscious bias/discrimination, the girls are disadvantaged. A new programme is being set up to help them be better than the boys”.

This study was 6 years ago. But it bothers me how people keep sharing this, among other articles, as some final pinnacle of truth (in this case, "women are better programmers than men"). Is there any merit to this idea?

Are there other studies that document the same thing or vice versa?

[–]RyansPutter 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This study was 6 years ago.

And they used Neverwinter Nights 2's modding software (which was included with the game - the developers of the game encouraged players to create new modules) for this study. NWN2 came out in 2006.

So they used then-8 year old software to carry out this study. Sounds valid to me.

[–]Lion_amongst_gods 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In that case, the logical conclusion of the study should be "Women are better at using extremely outdated software than are men". /s

Making stories is feminism all about these days anyway. Which others don't want to have any role in.

[–]Mythandros 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a bullshit study.

[–]Catcrumble 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But we've seen female-made games, and they're all terrible. Absolutely awful gameplay, lacklustre story and thankfully extremely short playtime.

[–]Lion_amongst_gods 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

and thankfully extremely short playtime.

You got me in the first half, not gonna lie.

[–]Catcrumble 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had to, for science!

[–]pkarlmann 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The word "better" shows what is going on: It's not an objective, but subjective study - the outcome therefor shouldn't surprise anyone.

Confirmation bias.

[–]Philsie 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, sure thing. Lol. Now test them both on parallel parking. I rest my case.
