Star Trek Discovery was shit anyway.

Voyager did it well. A strong female captain, along with other women in important roles, along with men in important roles, all with interesting stories and everyone being vital to the story, not just men, not just women.

White males are going extinct on TV tho. They are getting swapped with women and colored men. They made Arthur in Cursed Hispanic or something and the main character a woman. They made Achilles a black man aswell in the Troy show. So on.

The reason so many female character suck is that writers are so terrified of being labeled sexist/misogynist that they write the females as Mary Sue tropes, No flaws, no mistakes.

How many times can we sit through yet another "Burnham is right and can save everyone, but nobody will listen to her".

The male characters are allowed to be flawed and complex, they go through growth and regression. Female are one dimensional, and unintentionally sexist in their own way. Does a "strong female leader" have to be a bitch? we get men who inspire through confidence, competence, and...well leadership, female leaders are all too often just thoroughly unpleasant people. Georgiou is an example of that, she's like a cartoon character.

Chalk a lot of it up to poor and lazy writing. Writers used to freely admit they had difficulty writing women in strong roles without it looking awkward or just not making sense.

Writing a strong female character is somewhat hard. You do have to shift gears a little. Because chances are your character is doing something you normally wouldnt see a woman doing. Her motivations and methods are going to be a little different than a male character. So you have to compensate for that or maybe dive deeper in explaining it. The mistake is that most writers will usually overcompensate. They make two VERY big but extremely common mistakes. They either surround her with weak men. Or they make her a "Mary Sue." They don't allow her to have a weakness. Characters without weakness or flaws are boring and not relatable. These two mistakes will ruin your story.

It can be done. Believe it or not, you can write a story with both strong men and strong women and give them all believability and weaknesses. It's just Hollywood today is far too lazy to do it. And their main objective is now social justice and no longer about making good movies.

This woman committed countless unspeakable acts againt billions of lifeforms (even ate some of them) and what does the Federation do? Let her go free. The Federation preaches about their high values all the time but let a war criminal go when it serves their purposes.

But it doesn't stop there. After letting her go they HIRE HER to work for their most secure organization, section 31, all for the protection of Federation values! She is from an universe where she fought against those values tooth and nail!

So she does a 180 and becomes the best ally the Federation ever had.

My god, what were the writers on?!

I could never get into Discovery because it takes itself too seriously despite being a soap opera in space. It was just boring. I feel like it would suck whether the cast was diverse or not.

Star Trek has always been diverse; every iteration of the show has been progressive for its time. I find that a lot of self-described "progressive" modern media seems to be that way for marketing reasons, which makes it feel cheap and condescending. The cast is diverse, but the character writing is stereotypical and offensive in its own right.

Shows should always prioritize the writing. I wish the marketing wouldn't brag about diversity, since diversity should be a given. Like. Do they want a cookie??? Just make a good show and tell good stories. If the show is truly progressive, let the show speak for itself.

This is what most shows have become, a celebration of mediocrity, a stage for male bashing and for shoving their breed of identity politics down the audience's throat. It's relentless, and if you can spot it it makes almost all well written shows turn to shit.

Why do people preach fat acceptance? It’s not like fat people are poor, starving and overworked is it? They’re not exactly oppressed in any way whatsoever are they? When you take up two seats on the bus, one for each arse cheek, note that these seats are designed for one person each, maybe it’s not your condishuns, maybe it’s you stuffing your fat gob, and maybe it’s not oppreshun, maybe it’s doctors telling you that if you continue eating enough requirement for that of a small population daily, you will become so large that you will not even be able to wipe your own ass. In the cases where it’s leading to suicide that’s bad, but in the cases where it’s someone telling you that you will die, that’s just the truth. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi there. You saying that “constant crying and showing emotions make this all look like a chick-flick”, is not only poorly worded and grammatically incorrect, but it is also a statement that is deeply misogynistic and anti-men’s rights. Women AND MEN should be able to express their feelings and emotions in a non-judgemental and accepting environment. By claiming that a man crying makes the show a “chick-flick”, you are perpetrating the ideals of toxic masculinity, which GREATLY effects and harms many men around the world. Not only are you invalidating men’s emotions in this statement, but you are also utilising a mocking tone to insinuate that women constantly cry and are therefore unable to be “professionals, scientists... [and] soldiers”.

I agree, however, that women should never have to “look good at the expense of males”. If this is truely happening in this television show and other shows, this is certainly a very important men’s issue that deserves more recognition in the media. (If there are any online petitions for this, I’d be happy to sign them.)

Also, thank you for recognising and supporting the past strong female characters.

Evil bonehead Lorca vs badass war criminal Georgiou (whose crimes are totally forgiven)

They're both evil, and the show makes that abundantly clear. Her crimes weren't forgiven. They never happened in the prime Universe, so you can't really hold her to your rules, when you invaded her Universe. Not only that, but she joined a covert-ops group because she has the skills required for the job. Kind of like how Nazi scientists were hired by other countries.

Puppet captain Pike vs "Trust me I solve everything" Michael (with a male name)

Michael is often portrayed as impulsive, too emotional, and is widely hated by most people. Pike is portrayed as the perfect captain.

Emotionally unstable gay guy Stamets vs first year student genius "fat acceptance" Tilly

Stamets is shown to be more of a genius, and yes, he's a bit emotional because his husband was brutally killed by someone who he considered a friend, even if that person was brainwashed.

Emotionally unstable gay guy dr. Culber vs lesbian and outspoken genius Jett Reno

Reno is portrayed as being anti-social, and overly blunt. Culber was literally resurrected from the dead by some weird sentient fungus thing that exists in its own Universe, and ties other Universes together. Needless to say that his relationship, and mind, is going to suffer when he experienced a disembodied afterlife.

Klingon Moses vs Cleopatra. And Tyler who was ripped in half, and had the consciousness of said Klingon inhabiting his mind. No exactly unexpected that he have some mental issues.

There's only so much a person can handle reading your shit.

Constant crying and showing emotions make this all look like a chick-flick. These are supposed to be professionals, scientists, soldiers yet they cry and hug all the time or give endless speeches. Even klingons and vulcans. Showing emotional developement is okay, overusing touchy-feely scenes is not.

Many male characters are intentionally undeveloped and simple. The season 2 finale sums it up nicely: Saru asking women how long it will take them to override security: "5 minutes if you stop bothering us".

A common trope of techy people responding to a common question.

Yes, male characters are powerless all the time and they need strong female characters to be able to function at all. They are support characters only while women are disarming bombs, infiltrating systems, fighting aliens, saving lives, being heroes. The balance is entirely fucked up.

Saru is shown to be an absolute badass several times in the show. Show are all the make characters. Everyone was given moments to show how capable they are. Jesus Christ, you really need to grow up.

And you have problems with the show showcasing Michelle Yeoh being a badass, then you have more serious problems to deal with.

I congratulate the writers of STD for ruining the perfect balance of previous Star Trek series for the sake of "girl power!". It must have taken a lot of doing.

They've been doing it since the very beginning. There's literally an episode of TNG that show a matriarchal society. They had women be leaders in security, etc...

I love strong female characters, Ellen Ripley from Aliens being my favourite. She is genuine, strong but also vulnerable and fallible. An entirely believable character and that makes Alien and Aliens such good movies.

So long as the women are portrayed exactly how you want them, it's okay. But any deviation is not allowed, whatsoever? Star Fleet doesn't employ people like Ripley on their ships. She would be fired almost immediately.

Discovery went overboard with the female power and didn't care one bit about a healthy balance. What's tragic is that women complain all the time when they are underrepresented but have no problem when it happens to men.

Men aren't underrepresented in the show. What's wrong with you?

I watched through it all, and honestly I think you're being overly dramatic.

You know how feminist scholars like to go through all literature and media and view it with a "feminist lens" and then tell you everything about it that is wrong? You're doing the same thing, but in the other direction.
