I was recently incarcerated and processed because the mother of my child claimed that I had assaulted her. With no marks on her, the charges ended up being 'Uttering Threats'. While I did not end up being convicted, the police still have a record of me and the incident report. What bothers me is that it fell to me to pay a lawyer and jump through hoops to prove I was innocent, when the only thing against me was the word of the 'victim'.

Suppose I should finish this with a question. Why is our legal system (specifically referring to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, but I have heard of similarities across North America) so tailored towards women that we forget basic rights like 'innocent until proven guilty'?

Edit: response to Factory2's request for more of the story, specifically pertaining to the police.

I've had 3 major experiences with police officers, all of them relating to things this woman had said about me. The first instance was a female officer recording a statement I was making (a he said she said situation) over the phone. I later found out that said statement was never filed, even though I was told it would be.

The second was with the female officer who arrested me in the original thread's case. After the accusation of assault I was called at my home, and I agreed to come to the station to 'have a talk' (the officers words). I was immediately brought into an interrogation room, and told I was being arrested in no uncertain terms. I remember shifting in my chair slightly (I'm 6'1'' and reasonably built, but I was also at least 7 feet away) while speaking in a calm voice and the officer immediately un-clipped her pistol holster. I was not asked to give a statement, although they allowed me to when I demanded the right. The only 'evidence' against me was a statement made by my accuser.

The third was very soon after I had settled my court issue. I picked up my son from her house at our regularly agreed on time. I refused to speak to her about the two of us and our relationship, for obvious reason. She became angry with me, and when I left she called the police. She gave a description of me and the car I drive, and told police that 'a man' (she did not say the child's father) had broken into her house and abducted her son. Two officers pulled me over roughly 3 blocks from her house, drew their weapons, and threw me face down on the pavement. I don't blame this on the officers, but on the information they were given. 10 minutes later I've sorted everything out with the officers, and they've gone to inform my ex of the seriousness of her allegations and of how much time and resources she wastes.

The interesting part of this is that the ONLY police officers or court officials who have ever asked me for my side of the story, and/or put any of the blame on my ex were also the only two male officers ever involved.
