The weather today was insane, wind and rain. I was riding the subway (above ground) and spotted a girl next to me. The car door opened and a crazy breeze blew through. I went for the screamingly obvious opener.

Me: Jesus, this is insane.

She immediately opened up and started talking, as if she had been waiting for me to say something.

Her: Well, I'm used to it.

Me: You from here?

Her: I've lived here for 10 years.

Me: Oh, well. I know it's not nice to say a woman looks old and all but... you look more than 10 years old.

We talk for 10-15 minutes. She starts gathering her things.

Me: This your stop?

Her: No, bit it's 2 down from here.

Me: Okay, perfect. Just enough time for me to get your number.

Her: Oh, wow. You're going to marry a Muslim girl, eh? (It had entered the conversation that I was Jewish and she Muslim)

Me: Naw, I'm just going to take a Muslim girl out to coffee.

She tells me she doesn't know, that she'd prefer to do by email. I'm looking away from her, thinking about this. I was about to say okay when she tells me number is alright. I tell her if she's going to be too nervous to pick up, email is fine. She says, naw, she'll give her number. She still seems a bit unsure, and asks again details about what I do. I tell her. This seems to reassure her. She asks what my area code is so she'll know when I call. I call her phone so she has it.

There you go. We'll see if anything comes of it. On a side note, girls who voice concerns seem to be much more comfortable giving their number when I tell them it's ok not to give it if they're not comfortable.
