I work in an espresso bar, not American. Generally, the place is fairly egalitarian, except the usual "women can't do manual labor or touch dirty things, unless they're cleaning ladies." I just chalk it up to life and compensate my increased workload with increased eating (on the house, thankfully).

Today was a bit unusual: a female coworker was tasked with screwing down a small metal shelf. Not a physical effort by any stretch of imagination. It actually involved sitting down, which we are normally only allowed to do on breaks.
Upon my entering the vicinity, another coworker immediately volunteered my services as a technician, since (her words, not mine) "a woman can't be expected to [mess around with a screwdriver]". I was actually a bit amused, but readily offered my assistance. I make it a point to be as handy as possible (read: still not very...) and am also studying for a degree in engineering. An unscrewed metal shelf is just about the right degree of difficulty to placate my ego at this point.
The first woman refused, actually taking a little offense at being coddled. Fair enough, no harm done. I resumed my original duties. The second coworker reacted with shock, repeatedly asking if I was going to "let her do the work herself". Now annoyed, I offered my assistance once again, to which the first coworker replied that she is "not made of glass", thank you, and that she is perfectly capable of completing the task herself. Good point, if you ask me. The second coworker stared at me in disbelief, commenting how she was "disappointed" in me "as a man", presumably for not physically overpowering the first one and taking her screwdriver.
I replied that I thought she was being sexist. Evidently,this confused the second coworker, who claimed my inaction "did not make me look very sexy". She once again reitirated, that she had thought better of me as a man, at which point I left the conversation and dedicated my full attention to waiting customers (who pretended not to hear the whole exchange. A single male asserted the second coworker looked good and asked what her name was. Charming.)
Now this bothered me. We're not dealing with a Sheltered College Freshman here - the woman is in the middle of her compulsory military service. Still, in her eyes, to be a man means actively beating down women attempting to act like adults. This was a very sobering encounter with the "men are responsible for everything" trope I hear so much about, but am not used to seeing. Generally, the whole thing left me with a poor taste in my mouth.
TL;DR: Woman attempts to walk on her own, another tries bullying a man into carrying the first one, man gets paid weekend hours so it's all good.
