Uh... guys. First of all, she's not dressed as a BDSM sex toy. She's dressed as black cat from spiderman. The guy interviewing her was a total douchebag to the point I think he was a shock jock. What he did wasn't cool at all, regardless of what she wore. Complaining about people looking at you? Yeah, that's bullshit. Complaining about someone being a douchebag? No, she's in the right.

I'm skeptical: you chose to dress as a character inspired by the BDSM community and is focussed on its sexual attributes: eyes, lips, breasts. But more importantly, you went in costume for the purpose of having people look at you; you weren't there to give a talk or make an academic presentation. I have to say, you got exactly the kind of attention you sought out. But it sounds like a key aspect was that you didn't find these guys attractive; and that's what made it unpleasant for you.

If anyone degraded you, it was you, the minute you walked out of the house dressed to pull all attention to your sexual attributes.

I always think you should be mindful of how your actions may be perceived by others.

The concept of victim blaming is a moot point because you should always find ways to mitigate risk, else why by insurance or wear a cycle helmet for example? If some drunk mounts the pavement and knocks you over it's not your fault, but not having health insurance in that instance would be. If you died as a result of your injuries, I might make a point of it. This assumes you can choose to have insurance as for the purposes of my analogy, of course.

Now, she knew exactly what kind of reaction she would get, and those guys knew exactly what kinds of women would be there. That's a) why she went and b) why those interviewers were there. It's not like some "creepy" guy decided some day to quit his day job and interview women in revealing outfits at a convention.

If you look at her blog she's a freelance artist and costume designer, so she is after exposure. Apparently using sex appeal coupled with causing controversy is a way to generate publicity, I mean who would've thought?
