I did a bit of a double take initially, as I misread the statement at the end as "One in two girls growing up in Canada... will be sexually abused", not "...will be physically or sexually abused". One in two? Good lord.

And then I thought about this some more. Assuming that the old canard about one in four women suffering sexual assault being true (it's not, but let's run with this for a second) then that means that at minimum, one in four girls growing up in Canada is the victim of 'physical abuse'. How the hell does that happen?

I can only assume that either 'physical abuse' is a category that rather generously includes virtually any physical altercation - in which case young boys, with their frequent proclivity for fisticuffs, are being victimized at a rate just shy of one hundred percent - or these statistics are more than a little inflated.

I don't know; it's late on a Friday, and I may have overdone the caffeine just a little. Am I reading too much into this, or has the Ghost of Dr. Pepper seized control of my typing fingers?

1 in 2 women may be sexually or physically abused sounds pretty awful until you realize all this means is that half of girls might get a slap from mommy or daddy at some point.

I'm not saying this a good thing, but you could make that exact same claim with boys.
