Yes, it's dishonest. But a vasectomy does not eliminate the possibility of kids--you can get it reversed or have sperm extracted, or freeze some before you do the surgery.

All having a vasectomy would do is make it impossible for her to get pregnant against your consent. And considering that an estimated more than 10% of men are currently raising children not theirs unbeknownst to them, I don't even think the "you'll know she cheated" is that uncalled for.

Is that such bad advice, given the general attitude about reproductive rights nowadays? I think that I'll be suggesting strongly to my son that he donate some genetic material to a bank, and then get the ol' snippy snippy, so that if he does decide to have progeny in his life, it will be after having a serious conversation and a decision making process, instead of making a bad decision that will impact him negatively for the rest of his life. The comment in question could have been said better, and the idea of getting a vasectomy as insurance against cheating is a little over the top, but over all, I think that there might be a lot of dads like me out there trying to teach our sons that just putting a condom on isn't good enough. There are women out there that will use their reproductive rights as a weapon, and securing your genetic material is the best insurance against that.

Where is the shame there? You do not need to supply information about your sexual history or your contraceptive choices to your partner. I prefer honesty and openess but that doesn't mean that consequenceless lies are inherently evil.

How wrong is it to lie to your partner about you having had a vasectomy? It's pretty dishonest but it has no consequences, noones life is ruined by your lie.

I believe the statement you quoted to be little more than an inflammatory reaction to the bevvy of "How to get pregnant without your boyfriend knowing" posts.

That said... it is not uncommon for a group that feels oppressed to develop such resentment that they themselves begin to take on the negative traits of the "oppressors" and this is something that we definitely need to, as a group, watch out for.

What the fuck is wrong with you. He said that you shouldn't tell your partner that you have a vasectomy so that you can protect yourself from women who cheat. He did NOT say that you shouldn't be open with the fact that you do not want children.

If you have a vasectomy and say that you don't want kids, but you don't say you've got a vasectomy, then who gives a good goddamn; If you stated you don't want children, does it really matter that you took steps to prevent having children?

You're practically openly stating that one woman's right to have children should take priority over a man's right to avoid having children when you conflate these two completely different things based upon what you want to be said rather than what was actually said, and then you're following that up by making a blanket statement about men's rights as a whole. If you tell the girl you don't want kids, then of course it's not wrong to get a vasectomy w/o her knowledge. But in the OP, there was NO acknowledgement of this distinction. If you don't explicitly tell her you don't want kids, you are evil if you get your vas snipped without telling her.

As you pretty much said, there's no acknowledgement of this distinction whatsoever, so where the fuck do you get off on stating that he's saying that you should get into a relationship without stating your intention to avoid having children? So? His body, his choice. A man who is snipped is under no more of a requirement to tell a woman he's had a vasectomy any more than a woman who unilaterally decided for the both of them to get pregnant and stopped taking her birth control pills. And when you want to talk about morals, the above line cited in the OP is actually less morally reprehensible than the female equivalent. If a woman goes off her BC it'll directly affect the man AND society by way of bringing a child into the world that will need to be supported and provided for, which in the context of this thread would be against the man's wishes and set him up for indentured servitude. The opposite, a man getting snipped and not telling, doesn't have any consequences beyond which was typically already agreed upon--sex without any wish for pregnancy. So tell me, why the moral indignation? Hmmm?

As much as it sucks, I have to agree with the OP. I don't think it's right to be dishonest like that, but you really cannot trust ANYONE. No matter how much you think you know someone, you never know if a woman's biological clock will start ticking a little louder than normal all of a sudden and she wants a baby by any means necessary. If getting a vasectomy without telling her gets you out of a "oops, guess I forgot to take my pill, now pay up" situation...it's the lesser of two evils (better to be dishonest and lose a relationship than be stuck paying child support for 18 years).
