Considering that they are just now starting to get their act together regarding even compiling this data (whereas before "rape" was only by definition male on female)... I'm not particularly inclined to believe studies reporting on it.

Characterizing the sexual violence is the most difficult part of making these kinds of statements.

It is very easy to skew statistics by biasing against or for certain types of issues.

I think that there are certain types of behaviours that can be considered sexually violent that are more common among men and some that are more common among women.

One of the challenges, I think, is that men tend to under report in many studies, or else justify actions such as "well, I eventually went along with it and it was okay, so I guess it doesn't count." My own experience is that men are socialized to take more responsibility for their own contribution to these situations, where as there is significant efforts in advertising and media for women to take a zero-tolerance stance.

I wouldn't trust any sources to be completely accurate, but I would also challenge anyone to back up their claim if they said that men are more sexually violent. Usually when pressed, people will find the problems within their own study set and might back pedal.
