DP10 was targeted at women. That's the joke. It's one giant reverse psychology experiment... and it's working as expected.

Women in droves will come in to co-opt the "not for women" drink. The more DP targets it as "not for women" the more women will flock to it.

Over the last decade, the directors of marketing (or whatever they are called) have been rapidly rubbing their hands over how much profit this whole male/female only strategy has been generating.

Think for a second and honestly tell me just how many of today's gender targeted items REALLY have a NEED to be like that. If you break even the necessary hygiene products like shampoos and soaps down for example you'll find more or less the same ingredients in all shampoos, minus the flavors and vitamins and such for specialized care. It's simple chemistry, not magic, not flowers in women's shampoos and essences of strength in men's, just chemicals.

Of course the majority of the world doesn't quite know that, first of all being mindless cogs in mass society's consumerism and second because men and women get along less and less. We can let those hygiene products slide, but let's look at that soda now, it's a soda, it doesn't contain boobs, vagina, penis, testicles, estrogens or androgens, it's a god damned soda. But who's gonna buy another generic soda that in no way stands out from the rest of the sodas out there? Nobody, but slap some pink/blue labels on it and call it female/male with appropriate advertising lines (i.e. "only for real men!", "because you're a woman and you're special!") only and BAM, it will sell like hot cakes, because the easiest way to feel special is by looking between your legs: congratulations, you have something 50% of the world doesn't have, go crazy.

tl;dr: gender exclusive products are for the most part bullshit and are further dividing us while some corporate hacks are stroking their genitals at how much money this is generating.

Because the #1 rule of traditional masculinity is:

No Sissy Stuff: the stigma of all stereotyped feminine characteristics and qualities, including openness and vulnerability.

This rule is still vigorously enforced in our society, and as you've noted, the primary enforcers are often female.

Why do some women enforce traditional male roles? These women want the option of being either vulnerable or strong as it suits them. When they want to be vulnerable, they want men to be strong and support them. They do not want men to have the option of being vulnerable, because then these women would lose the dependable support of strong men, and hence lose the freedom to be vulnerable whenever they choose.

Female specific products are signifiers of femininity, with the implied characteristic of vulnerability. A man using these products is showing his willingness to step outside of the traditional "strong man" role. This is threatening to some women because it suggests a willingness of that man to forgo his traditional strong supportive role. And if all men do that and start acting like women, who's going to change their flat tires and fix their roofs?

Funny story, chocolate only became known as a woman's treat from advertising, ie women were just told that its what they like.

Basically advertisers ployed women by using gender.

The only thing I can think of is hungry man tv dinners and chunky soup. And power tools and trucks. It is weird though. I'm not too sensitive, I don't see why DP10 is getting so much shit. Reading some women's reactions are quite entertaining.

Because women make most of the buying decisions for their husband and children and so it's generally a bad move to not target them, unless it's a purely-male thing.

If the people at the marketing department at Dr. Pepper were trying to target men, I don't think they were, they did so because typically males don't really count calories and opt out of a lighter version of a product, with the exception being beer. A man is not likely to try Dr. Pepper 10, but rather the regular version of the drink.
